What is vitrectomy? How is it applied?

Vitrectomy is the process of removing the intraocular gel called vitreus, which fills the inside of the eyeball, from the eye.

What is vitrectomy?

The surgeon, who enters the vitreous through 3 holes, can reach the retina layer in this way.
A light source to illuminate the inside of the eye, a special tool for cutting and vacuuming the vitreous, and another device that delivers fluid that maintains a homogeneous pressure inside the eye pass through these 3 holes.
The size of the holes is approximately 1 mm. It is a highly gentle surgery and is performed by vitreoretinal surgeons.
In our center, experienced surgical staff in the vitreoretinal field often perform vitrectomy operations.
