The thyroid gland is an endocrine gland located in the front of the trachea in the neck and provides many metabolic balances in the body. It consists of two lobes, right and left.
What are the thyroid diseases and symptoms
Goiter is the enlargement of the thyroid gland by the widespread enlargement of the entire thyroid gland or the formation of various sized lumps in the thyroid gland, which we call nodules.
If the entire thyroid gland is enlarged, the gland usually starts to work overtime and reveals the clinical condition we call "hyperthyroidism". In hyperthyroidism, complaints such as palpitations, tremors in the hands and irritability occur because the thyroid gland is overworked. In cases where the thyroid gland becomes too large, it can also give symptoms as swelling in the neck.
Nodular goiter is encountered with the formation of nodules in the thyroid gland. If the size of these nodules exceeds a certain size, if there is a recent growth or if there is a suspicion of cancer, they should be treated with surgery. In this case, it is not important whether the gland is working more or less in making the decision for surgery.
Thyroid cancer is a cancer that usually has a benign prognosis and originates from the thyroid gland. It usually presents as nodular goiter. Color Doppler ultrasonography and ultrasound-guided needle biopsy of the suspicious nodule should be performed as further examinations in a patient with nodules suspected of thyroid cancer. As with all cancers, early diagnosis of thyroid cancer ensures early treatment. Surgical removal of the gland is required in cases of suspected thyroid cancer.
Why the thyroid gland is removed by surgery:
The patients with nodular goiter disease in which the thyroid gland is overactive and cannot be cured by medical treatment, large nodules are detected, and the thyroid gland is removed. The thyroid gland is removed in patients diagnosed or suspected of having cancer. It is the operation of removing the thyroid gland in the neck due to a nodule or cancer.
This operation is performed with a monitor that detects the nerves going to the vocal cords.
