This disease, commonly known as "MS" (EMES), is characterized by inflammation of the central nervous system (CNS) and causes demyelination (destruction of the special myelin protein that surrounds the nerve tissue by the immune system) and nerve cell damage ( It progresses with degeneration). In other words, MS is an autoimmune disease that involves demyelination and inflammation of the CNS. Autoimmunity; In short, it can be explained as the immune system's inability to recognize the person's own cells, as a result of which it tries to destroy the body by thinking it is a foreign substance, and as a result, the body harms itself.
In Turkey, the incidence is 40 per 100,000 people and there are approximately 35,000 MS patients. It is estimated. It is generally common between the ages of 20-40 and in women. Factors that cause the disease include smoking, vitamin D deficiency, various viral infections, genetics, excessive salt consumption and obesity. The severity of the disease varies from person to person, depending on the affected area in the nervous system and the type of MS. Among the symptoms, depending on the frequency, loss of strength, loss of vision, loss of sensation, double vision, dizziness, urinary problems, as well as loss of balance, fatigue and weakness may also be observed.
Diagnosis. It is diagnosed by neurologist examination and MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), one of the imaging methods. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and evoked potentials performed in neurology clinics are auxiliary diagnostic tests used for diagnosis. In MRI, lesions formed against myelin, which we call plaques in the brain, are seen as MRI lesions specific to MS.
Although the disease does not constitute an obstacle for pregnancy, it is necessary to cooperate with the physician if a child is desired. For vaccinations to be administered to an MS patient, the approval of the physician monitoring the patient must be obtained.
The course of every MS disease is not the same. According to popular belief, MS patients do not necessarily have to be confined to a wheelchair.
The treatment should be in cooperation with the physician, and maximum benefit should be provided for the patient by utilizing Physiotherapy and other treatments. It is useful to remember this. See the life we live like a movie If we can figure it out, MS disease is not the end of this movie.
