Septum perforation; It refers to the holes formed later in the nasal septum, which consists of bone at the back and cartilage at the front, which divides the nasal cavity into two. The most common cause of septum perforation is the negativities that occur during the recovery period after nose surgery. Septum perforation after nose surgery is a sad situation for both the patient and the physician. Apart from nasal surgeries, septum perforation may occur due to nasal trauma, various infections and rarely oncological diseases. Septum perforation may also develop in people who use cocaine.
Septum perforations are examined in 3 parts according to their size. Those smaller than 0.5 cm are called small perforations, those between 0.5-2 cm are called medium sized, and those larger than 2 cm are called large perforations. Nasal congestion, nosebleeds and wind noise while breathing are the most common complaints in people with septum perforation. If the perforation is small and located in the back, it usually does not cause any symptoms and treatment may not be required. However, perforations located in the front are the cause of complaints.
There are many surgical methods defined for the repair of septum perforations. However, as the size of the perforation increases, the chance of success may decrease. It is generally believed that the chance of success in surgery for septum perforations is low. However, this is not true.
There is a surgical method we developed to repair septum perforations. In this method, we close the hole using healthy tissues inside the nose. Among the patients we operated on and were completely successful, there were patients with septum perforation of 3 cm in size. The most important element in the success of this surgery is the health of the mucosa that covers the inside of the nose.
As a result, the development of septum perforation is a not very rare complication after nose surgery and it can be repaired with surgery.
