The degree of vaginismus and the severity of vaginismus are synonymous. The degree and severity of vaginismus may vary for everyone. The first classification of vaginismus on this subject was made by a scientist named 'Lamont' in 1978. Lamont divided vaginismus patients into 4 separate groups according to their stories and gynecological examination findings. In recent years, another researcher named Pacik added 5th Degree vaginismus and divided vaginismus into 5 groups.
1. Level Vaginismus:The mildest form. These patients can control the contractions of their vaginal muscles with the suggestions given during the examination. There is limited penile access. There is no sexual trauma in the past.
2. Level Vaginismus:It is a moderate form of vaginismus. The woman experiences limited sexual intercourse, but avoids sexual intercourse due to the pain she feels. The patient can touch the vaginal entrance with her finger. These vaginismus patients continue to contract their pelvic floor muscles throughout the examination, despite the suggestions given by the gynecologist during the examination.
3. Level Vaginismus: In the upper-moderate form of vaginismus, the patient experiences severe contractions during sexual intercourse, sexual intercourse has never occurred. He cannot touch the vaginal entrance. The patient tries to prevent the doctor by contracting himself during the examination by the gynecologist.
4. Advanced Vaginismus: Advanced (severe) form of vaginismus. In these vaginismus patients, when the moment of sexual intercourse comes, fear, anxiety and contraction occur in the body along with the pelvic muscles. And when the relationship ends, it takes time to calm down. During the gynecological examination performed by the doctor, she raises her hips, closes her legs and thus prevents the examination.
5. Level Vaginismus:It is the most severe form of vaginismus. When the patient has sexual intimacy, a panic attack accompanied by fear and anxiety develops. It takes time to calm down. Due to the intense fear experienced during the gynecological examination performed by the physician, these patients experience tremors, rapid breathing, palpitations, and crying crises during the examination. Reactions such as fainting spells, nausea, vomiting, running away from the table may occur. It does not allow gynecological examination.
Determining the degree or severity of vaginismus is important for planning the treatment.
