- What are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom Teeth are the third molars at the very end of both sides of the jaw. Since they are the last teeth to appear in the mouth and they usually appear between the ages of 16 and 20, they are also called wisdom teeth.
Since wisdom teeth are the last permanent teeth to emerge, there may not be enough space in your mouth for them. This may cause wisdom teeth to remain impacted under the gum tissue or bone or next to another tooth. Swelling may occur if the teeth are impacted.
Partially erupted or crooked wisdom teeth may also cause pain, crowding or disease. It is recommended to have wisdom teeth examined between the ages of 16 and 19, as the roots of wisdom teeth extracted before the age of twenty will be less developed and tooth extractions at this age will cause fewer complications.
- How to Extract Wisdom Teeth?
Tooth extraction is a very routine procedure. Your dentist will recommend that you be “put to sleep”with general anesthesiaor that the area in your mouth is numbed with local anesthesia with a medicine.
After the tooth (or teeth) is extracted. You may be given a gauze pad to gently bite on for 30 to 45 minutes to reduce any bleeding. Although there may be pain or swelling in the head, this pain disappears within a few days.If pain, bleeding, swelling or fever is persistent and serious, you should consult your dentist.
Due to crowding or impaction. Removing wisdom teeth does not affect your oral health or the way your mouth closes in the future.
