What is Cervical Wound - Cervical Erosion?
It is the deterioration of the normal tissue covering the cervix after various pathological effects. Since the cervix loses its normal tissue, it usually appears red, irregular and distinctly different from the surrounding tissue. Sometimes this area The top is contaminated with dark infected discharge, and sometimes bleeding foci can be seen in the tissue that becomes sensitive due to inflammation.
What are the symptoms of Cervical Wound?
Due to the destruction of the tissues around the cervix, this area is easily invaded by microbes. It may become infected. A thick, slimy discharge begins from the spilled tissue area. After infection, the color of the discharge may vary from dark gray to green. Depending on the microbe that causes the inflammation, it also causes various bad odors.
Cervical tissue. It has become very sensitive due to its deterioration. It bleeds immediately with light touches. Bleeding occurs when the penis touches the cervix during deep penetration during intercourse. In other words, it bleeds from a small amount to a few pints during sexual intercourse.
What are the causes of Cervical Wound?
The most common cause of cervical wounds is bacterial infections. When the infection that starts in the vagina is neglected, it progresses and causes chronic inflammation in the cervix. Chronic inflammation causes the tissue to deteriorate over time and become ulcerated, that is, turn into a wound.
Other reasons we can list are: birth. Damage to the cervix during pregnancy, hormonal changes, sexual intercourse with infected men, frequent vaginal douche, use of spermicides or lubricating creams, pregnancy, and those using birth control pills can be seen.
How is the treatment done?
Antimicrobial drug treatment is not possible because the tissue covering the cervix is damaged and shed. No benefit can be achieved with treatment for other etiological causes. The cervix is an organ with the potential to regenerate itself, like our liver. Even if we destroy a part of the cervix, it can regenerate itself. The main purpose of treatment is to treat what is damaged. It is to give the cervix a chance to treat the wound that has become chronic by destroying the tissue with various methods. Generally, two methods are used, cauterization, that is, treatment with heat, or cryotherapy, that is, freezing the tissue.
Wound. Cauterization
The most commonly used treatment method for cervical wounds is cauterization (wound burning). Before cauterization, a smear test is performed on the patient with a wound in the cervix. The aim is to confirm the existence of the wound pathologically and to confirm the underlying disease. It is to rule out any benign pathology.
A device called Electrocautery is used for the procedure. The device converts electrical energy into heat energy. Local anesthesia is applied to the patient during the procedure. It is a simple procedure that takes 10-15 minutes in total, including anesthesia.
The patient is prepared for the gynecological examination table. While applying cautery, a plastic speculum must be applied because when the cautery tip touches the metal speculum, the patient's comfort is disrupted. After the plastic speculum is placed, the vagina is painted and disinfected with batikon. Local anesthetic material is applied to the cervix from four points. Anesthesia After the bleeding is achieved, the wound is destroyed by cautery. After bleeding is controlled, the cauterized area is sterilized with batikon. After the patient's perineum is cleaned, the patient is removed from the table. The patient does not feel anything other than slight warmth in the cauterized area, and can return to daily life immediately. You will be called for a check-up after one and a half months. Sexual intercourse should not be attempted until the check-up. You can swim in the sea using a tampon, but the tampon should be removed immediately after swimming. After the procedure, we will have a discharge that is initially pink and then turns gray over time. The reason for this is that the damaged tissues are shed, leaving normal tissue in their place.
Wound Freezing (Criotherapy)
Cryotherapy is the freezing and destruction of the wound by applying various freezing gases with a device called cryo. Nitrous Oxide gas is most commonly used. The patient is prepared on the gynecological examination table. There is no need to apply local anesthesia during the procedure. .Again, applying a plastic speculum is better for comfort. After inserting the speculum, the cervix is cleaned. The applicator tip of the cryon is adjusted according to the size of the wound. The applicator tip is applied to the wound for approximately 5 minutes. The patient can immediately return to her daily life after the procedure. She is called for a check-up after approximately one month. .Sexual intercourse should not be attempted until the check-up. You can swim in the sea using a tampon. We may have copious discharge after the treatment. Do not be afraid of this situation. It is beneficial because it results from the cleaning of damaged tissue.
The cure rates of Cryotherapy and Cauterization are close to each other. The treatment approach to be applied is decided by the physician by evaluating the patient's condition.
