Bruxism (teeth grinding) is a condition of jaw clenching and teeth grinding caused by strong jaw movements that usually occur during sleep. We can count psychological and anatomical reasons among the reasons for its occurrence.
Anatomical reasons are problems that occur in the jaw area and arise from the alignment of the teeth. This causes malocclusion. People who experience this problem see that the length of the teeth shortens due to wear on the cutting edges of the teeth, and very thin cracks appear on the tooth surfaces. In addition, patients have increased cold and hot sensitivity due to the thinning of tooth enamel tissue.
Another reason for teeth grinding is psychological reasons. Stress has a huge impact on bruxism. The first place we see signs of stress in our body is the oral tissues. Stress has been determined to be both the cause of bruxism and the most important factor that increases the severity of the event. Due to the negativities we experience in our daily lives, tension, teeth clenching and grinding occur quite frequently while sleeping. Reasons that increase teeth grinding include extreme nervousness, being too sensitive, and meticulousness. Teeth grinding and clenching problems can be seen not only in adults but also in children. It can be seen during periods when the palate is itchy, during teething in babies, and during the emergence of permanent teeth in children.
Negative situations that may occur as a result of teeth grinding and clenching;
Extreme sensitivity of teeth
Breakage of teeth
Loosening of teeth
br /> Recession in the gums
Abrasions on the teeth
Irritation on the cheeks
Muscle pain
Headache
Jaw joint pain
Teeth grinding (bruxism) ) is a disease that can be treated. The aim of the treatment is to prevent permanent damage to the teeth and jaw joint and to eliminate pain. The first stage is to eliminate stress. "Night guards", which are applied by the dentist and placed between the lower and upper jaw teeth to prevent the teeth from coming into contact with each other during sleep, are the most important tool used in the symptomatic treatment of teeth grinding, but this method may not be sufficient, and some additional treatment methods are used. These methods include sleep therapy, measures to ensure comfortable sleep, muscle relaxant medication, prosthesis applications to replace missing teeth, and replacement of incorrectly made dental fillings and coatings.
