Sugar also acts as a pleasure because it triggers the secretion of the hormone serotonin, known as the "happiness hormone". ~ This sudden sense of 'pleasure' given by sugar is one of the reasons why we resort to sweets in celebrations or in times of self-reward and relaxation. ~ But sugar triggers an increase in insulin. Because our body tries to normalize the glucose level in the blood. The resulting 'sugar crash' provokes the desire to eat more sweets, resulting in a cycle of overeating. ~ What's the right amount? Our bodies cannot distinguish between natural sugar found in fruit, honey or milk, and processed sugar extracted from sugar cane and sugar beets. ~ All the sugar we take is broken down into glucose and fructose and processed by the liver. ~ Sugar is stored as glycogen or fat, or distributed as glucose through the blood for use in cells. ~ In other words, the amount of sugar taken is the determining factor in terms of health. While shopping in the markets, we can measure the following: A processed food containing 15 grams of sugar per 100 grams can be classified as high sugar, and one containing 5 grams per 100 grams can be classified as low sugar.
So why do we tend to sweets?
Half of a healthy person's daily diet should consist of carbohydrates. In order to lose weight, the bodies of people who eat low in carbohydrates require sugar to fill the carbohydrate deficiency. For this reason, we dietitians do not cut bread, rice and pasta in diets, we change their type. For example, suggesting whole wheat bread instead of white bread, bulgur instead of rice pilaf. This does not mean that the rice pilaf cannot be eaten. Even if people without diabetes or insulin resistance want to lose weight, it will not be a problem to eat rice pilaf. Because the protein sources such as meat, chicken, fish, yoghurt given with it will delay the digestion of the food and prevent the rapid rise and fall of blood sugar. That's why we add oil seeds or protein next to the dried fruits we give. In summary, the desire to eat sweets depends on blood sugar, the nutrition of the person should be regulated by a specialist.
