HOW CAN WE PROTECT OUR TOOTH ENAMEL?

Tooth enamel is the strongest tissue in our body. This outer layer on our teeth helps protect our teeth from daily wear and tear caused by extremely hot or cold foods and drinks. In addition, tooth enamel acts as a protective shield against acids and chemicals that damage teeth.

When the enamel layer begins to wear away, your teeth become vulnerable to decay. You start to react more to hot or cold foods and drinks. Because at this point, the components in the food are transmitted to your nerves through the gaps in your tooth enamel. With some simple habits, you can prevent the deterioration of your tooth enamel and maintain its pearly whites. But first, let's examine the reasons that cause erosion.

WHAT CAUSES EROSION?

We can list the following as those responsible for the erosion that occurs on the outer layer of your teeth:

Excess consumed sugar: Clean your teeth regularly. When you do not brush regularly, bacteria that accumulate in your mouth feed on sugar and produce acids that damage tooth enamel.

Too sour foods: They damage tooth enamel by containing too much acid.

Dry mouth: Saliva accumulates in your mouth. It cleans bacterial acids and remaining food residues, normalizes your pH level and prevents tooth decay. Alcoholism or excessive alcohol consumption also causes serious damage to tooth enamel by causing dry mouth.

Reflux disease: Gastroesophageal reflux disease damages your tooth enamel by carrying stomach acids to your oral cavity.

Bulimia. (vomiting disease): People with this disease frequently vomit. Enamel problems are common in these patients due to frequent contact of stomach acid with the teeth.

Drugs and supplements containing high amounts of acid, such as aspirin and vitamin C, also damage tooth enamel.

In addition, their teeth are very hard. Brushing or grinding can also be given as examples of these reasons.

A feeling of pain occurs when you consume hot, cold or sweet food or drink.

HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOUR TOOTH ENAMELA?

You can have a healthier mouth with regular dental care from your dentist and some precautions you take. To have healthier teeth and a healthy mouth:

Do not consume too much food and drinks with high acid content such as cola and fruit juice. If you consume an acidic drink, do so at mealtimes. In this way, you will make the work of your tooth enamel easier.

Rinse your mouth with water immediately after consuming an acidic food. Consider using a straw to prevent the harmful substances in these foods from sticking to your teeth. Be careful not to rinse these drinks in your mouth when consuming them. You can also complete your meal with a glass of milk or a piece of cheese to get rid of these acids.

You can chew sugar-free gum containing xylitol. Xylitol helps reduce the amount of acid in your mouth. Additionally, chewing gum helps you secrete more saliva (which strengthens your teeth with key minerals).

Drink plenty of water during the day for dry mouth.

Use a soft toothbrush and avoid brushing your teeth too hard. Try not to brush.

Wait at least 1 hour before brushing your teeth after consuming acidic food or drink. Because the acid in these foods softens your tooth enamel and makes it more vulnerable.

Use mouthwash and choose toothpaste containing fluoride.

If you have disorders such as bulimia, alcohol addiction and heartburn. If you have any, be sure to get treatment for them.
