Menisci are structures consisting of connective tissue and cartilage located on the upper three joint surfaces of the tibia in the shape of a half moon in the knee joint.
The inner meniscus is C-shaped and the outer meniscus is O-shaped. The part of the meniscus attached to the joint capsule is vascular, while the other parts are non-vascular. Since the inner meniscus is less mobile than the outer meniscus, it is more injured.
The menisci provide joint stability, shock absorption, surface adaptation, equal distribution of joint fluid, braking excessive flexion and extension, transmission of the load to the joint and Their function is to reduce contact stress by expanding the joint surface.
Menisci are usually injured as a result of rotation of the knee joint. Locking, feeling of discharge, swelling in the knee joint, pain on the inner and outer surfaces of the joint, and atrophy in the muscles on the front surface of the thigh are the main clinical examination findings. Fresh, stable, small marginal tears can be treated conservatively. Other than this, the treatment of meniscus tears is surgery.
Arthroscopic surgical intervention is performed in surgery. Edge tears are stitched under the age of 40. Partial or total meniscectomy is performed for other meniscus tears. After arthroscopic meniscus surgery
muscle exercises are started immediately. The patient is discharged on the same day. Ice is applied for 3 days. The car can be used after 2 weeks. He can return to sports after 3 weeks. Damage caused by a force applied from outside the human body is defined as trauma. In orthopedic terms, trauma is defined as fracture, dislocation and fracture-dislocation.
Unfortunately, in our country, we frequently encounter fractures, dislocations and fracture-dislocations that occur as a result of traffic accidents, gunshot wounds and falls from height. Damages resulting from such injuries may result in malunion or non-union if not treated promptly and appropriately. These unpleasant consequences affect the person's remaining life both in terms of health and social aspects.
Such negative consequences that may occur can be prevented by the most appropriate treatment and by experienced physicians. With the extension of human life and the increase in bone destruction after menopause, especially in women, osteoporosis (decrease in bone quality and strength) ) is formed. Since osteoporotic bones have less resistance to trauma, serious fractures can occur with simple falls. The main goal should be to diagnose and treat these patients much faster and to integrate them into society.
