What Should You Do If Your Child Doesn't Want to Study?

Children observe, examine, try, research; in other words, they want to explore. This is their inherent way of learning. When it comes to academic education, it is not possible to talk about this natural tendency to learn. Actions that are extremely boring for children, such as remaining still, sitting, waiting, reading and listening, must be carried out together and continued. At the same time, the homework added to long school hours, the tests the child has to solve, and the revision work he is expected to do are extremely tiring. For these reasons, children do not want to study.

However, there are also approaches of parents or teachers who tell them to study constantly. , can turn children off from studying. Getting angry, forcing, or punishing the child unless he/she studies may cause the child to completely lose motivation in this area.

However, all this does not mean that children will not take responsibility for studying or that they will not acquire the habit of studying.

Starting from the first grade of primary school, It is also observed that children who are given the responsibility of studying enjoy learning over time and are able to maintain this habit. In addition, I experience in my clinical studies that children who could not acquire the habit of studying at a young age can acquire the habit of studying at a later age.

Before supporting your child who does not want to study, take responsibility for studying; You should not overlook your child's ability to take on and fulfill other responsibilities in daily life, whether he likes his school and teacher, whether he has motivation for academic activities, whether he has attention deficit or learning problems, whether his behavior of not studying has turned into stubbornness in your child's relationship with you.

If there is a problem in the areas mentioned above, cooperating with the school-teacher and working in cooperation with a child mental health specialist will ensure that you get a much healthier and more effective result.

Although there are some differences according to age groups, to ensure that your child studies;

; First of all, you should try to make studying one of your child's daily activities. For example, just as your child has breakfast in the kitchen at approximately the same time, watches cartoons, plays on the computer or tablet, plays the piano, or goes to training, you should support him to include studying in his life as one of his daily chores.

Together with your child. You should create determined study times. This should be about the same time each day. For example, after coming from school, having a snack, playing games for 20-30 minutes, etc.

You should determine the study time with your child. You should start from as short a period as possible and gradually extend this period. The ideal time is 10-15 minutes of study time in the first days. 15-20 minutes for the second week following, 20-30 minutes for the next week, etc. You should also support your child not to fall below the specified time. You can use this as an alarm clock, alarm, etc. to understand that the working time has expired. You can make him realize it himself by using tools. In this way, you will support your child's internalization that studying behavior is his/her responsibility.

You should ensure that your child studies in the same environment. One day in his room, another day in the living room, etc.

While studying, you should ensure that the surface of the desk and the field of view are as plain and empty as possible.

There should be no TV, mobile phone, computer, etc. in the place where he is during the lesson. You should make sure that there are no tools available.

You should teach your child study techniques according to his learning skills or get support in this regard. For example, does your child learn better by reading aloud, underlining, writing, etc.

While you are doing a fun activity yourself; For example, while watching TV You should not remind your primary or secondary school child to study or force him to study while playing games with your other child or using your mobile phone. This approach of yours will do nothing but lower his/her motivation/desire.

You should not tell your child to study whenever you see that he or she is idle.

Tell your child or other people not to study in a way that he or she can hear. You shouldn't complain that he doesn't like to work. Because, like any behavior you criticize negatively, constantly expressing that he is not studying indicates that he will become stubborn and lose motivation in this regard, and that this behavior will be accepted/taken for granted by you. You trust that he will earn money and do his homework regularly; You should say that although it is normal for your child to be bored, you believe that he/she can fulfill these responsibilities.

You should take care to carefully implement these suggestions for at least 3 weeks so that your child's studying becomes a habit.

When he/she misses or does not do his/her homework. You should let your child experience the experience of receiving a warning from his teacher and never do his homework.

Studying and doing homework is boring and difficult for children. Young children try to listen to lessons or do homework to gain the approval of their teachers and parents. Older children may or may not have acquired the habit of studying, depending on whether their responsibility-taking skills have developed or not. With your positive, adequate and regular support, there is no reason why your child should not take responsibility for studying and acquire this habit.
