Many people have gone on a diet at least once in their life to get rid of their excess weight and have a healthier and fitter body. And for many people, this situation resulted in disappointment; Either he could not lose weight or he regained the weight he lost after stopping the diet. So why? Because we stay STARVING. Sounds ridiculous, right? The biggest reason why we cannot lose weight is that we are hungry. I will give brief information about the reasons for this in the rest of the article.
Defense mechanisms in all living things in nature have been developed to keep the organism alive in situations of crisis and famine. However, there is no mechanism to protect us in situations of abundance and prosperity. With the advancement of technology and advances in agriculture, we no longer have to spend energy chasing after food and finding it as our ancestors did. These excess calories, which many of us cannot spend due to high-calorie foods and sedentary lifestyles, are stored as fat and cause obesity, the epidemic of the 21st century. Obesity causes many secondary diseases such as type-2 diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart diseases, joint problems and sleep apnea, which negatively affect the quality of life and lead to deaths at an early age. So, is it necessary to lose weight?
When we start a diet, the first thing we do is reduce the calories we consume and starve ourselves. The key point here is HUNGER. The feeling of hunger activates our body's defense mechanism. Your body wants to maintain the current weight and reference point. Because your body does not know that you are on a diet. Your body interprets this situation as "we have entered a period of famine, I must protect myself, I must not die" and the first thing it does is reduce your metabolic rate. Thus, it tries to maintain its current mass and live on the calories you consume. This is neither your body's fault nor yours. This is a necessary answer. As a result, after a while after you start the diet, your weight loss rate decreases as this response develops. This causes many people to become discouraged and abandon the diet. This is exactly where the second mechanism comes into play. Our body, which has plenty of calories and food after quitting the diet, is better prepared for the next crisis and famine period. It also starts to build more storage. The result is to gain more weight than when we started the diet.
The aim of obesity surgery is to break this mechanism. If we give an example from sleeve gastrectomy surgery; Surgical procedures not only help the patient eat less, but also reduce the feeling of HUNGER. This occurs both by reducing the stomach volume and by greatly reducing the levels of the Ghrelin hormone responsible for the feeling of hunger. In this way, the patient is satisfied with a small amount of food, and since he does not feel hungry, this defense mechanism does not work. The resulting weight loss will be much more noticeable and permanent.
I wish you all healthy days.
