What wonderful games we had in our childhood and got used to the professions. Now, all the games are virtual.
Sometimes, I experience such examinations that I am torn between not disturbing the crying child's psychology by continuing and coming to terms with not being able to help his physical distress by not continuing. Fortunately, my examinations are very productive, thanks to my healthy-minded parents.
It is our mutual desire, as doctors, and for you, as parents, that doctor visits go smoothly and be productive in every sense. It is actually very important for our children to get used to health checks in terms of their emotional attachment and protecting their lifelong health. Children who are not afraid of health checks grow up as individuals who care about their health. Sometimes we are left with such fears that it may take time for our children and us to get used to each other as doctors. Here, as adults, both parties need to first trust each other, be patient, and then wait for our child to adopt health checks. After the age of 4 at the latest, children begin to feel comfortable with health checks and identify themselves with their doctors.
THY DOCTOR WILL BE ANGRY! THE DOCTOR GIVES INJECTIONS!
Believe me, I don't know what to say in the face of these words that I still hear at least a little in my medical practice, besides what should our children do?
The most common mistake is to use doctors as a warning while training. Doctors are their loving friends who aim to make them well.
Look what you, as parents, can do to reduce the fear of doctors:
1- It can be said that the examination will be done in accordance with the age.
As the ability to perceive and interpret logically is not very good between the ages of 2-3, excessive explanations may cause more anxiety and panic. Young children can be told that their doctor is waiting for them, and if they stay well, they have a surprise. Your doctor can explain the vaccine in appropriate language.
Please do not lie. Coming to the doctor saying we are going to the toy store or for a walk would be both a great disappointment and a loss of confidence for him/her. 'We will go to your doctor. Then we'll do whatever you want' This would be a much more realistic approach.
Try to answer the questions asked as realistically as possible. Tell him that he can talk about everything about his health with his doctor.
2- Easily removable clothing should be preferred for the examination.
Although it is a special pleasure to examine my beautiful girls and handsome young men, any clothing that can be opened easily, taken off easily, does not have tight legs, and is not particularly tight at the neck entrance is suitable for examination. Believe me, it is not easy to undress and be examined with difficulty in the presence of another person, and even this attempt may frighten your child and make him cry.
3- Examination time should be chosen according to the child's daily time.
If there is no emergency, if you choose a time that does not coincide with daytime sleep, the examination can be done without getting restless.
For young children, it would be better to arrange the time according to the availability of the school situation.
4- My favorite game is 'DOCTOR'
From 18 months onwards, it will be better to set up educational games. Playing 'doctor' at home with children who are just starting out and letting them take a doctor's bag and examine you will help them perceive the examination session as a game.
If your child has an attachment toy that feels safe, be sure to take it with you.
5- You can try to have a theme of 'WHILE GOING TO THE DOCTOR' in your stories and tales.
You can visualize what happens at the doctor the day before the examination, how we will be examined, and how doctors heal us with love.
I hope that every examination with our children will be like being a doctor, and I wish you healthy days.
