When does the eye examination begin?
Contrary to popular belief, eye examination begins immediately after the birth of the baby. The first of the common problems of newborns is the eye infection we call Conjunctivitis. This condition can be diagnosed and treated with a simple examination. However, a general eye examination can also diagnose whether there is a problem in the eye anatomy. Some diseases such as coloboma, congenital cataract, glaucoma, megalocornea, retinopathy of prematurity, retinoblastoma can be diagnosed by eye examination of the newborn. For this reason, eye control is very important from birth.
Retinopathy of Prematurity can be frequently observed in babies born prematurely and with low birth weight who have received oxygen in incubators. For this reason, babies with these risks should be consulted by an ophthalmologist.
Babies can usually shift their eyes until the 6th month. An eye misalignment observed from the 6th month onwards should be checked for strabismus.
At what age is it possible to detect eye defects?
Eye problems such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism can now be solved with advanced devices (plusoptix, hand autorefs). etc.) can be diagnosed by measuring from a certain distance without making children cry. If an eye defect is detected, it can be easily treated by wearing glasses. If the child is at an age where he can express himself, amblyopia can be diagnosed and this condition can be corrected early with eye closure treatments.
Thanks to these examinations, eye defects and amblyopia are treated at an early age and conditions that can affect the child's entire life are prevented before they begin.
Eye examination in school-age children?
School-age children are now old enough to express themselves easily. They can openly express their complaints to their parents that they cannot see the board clearly. It is important for parents to question this situation in some children with shy characters. Likewise, a child who cannot see the board clearly may fall behind in his classes and fail at school. Eye examination should be performed twice a year or at least once a year.
In what cases should the family consult an ophthalmologist?
If there is a complaint of not being able to see the blackboard at school,
Watch the television too closely. If he watches television,
If he always bends his head in one position while watching television,
School is at the beginning. If there is a regression in vision,
If he/she suspects that the eye is misaligned,
If he states that he cannot see far or near clearly in any way,
Children with medical problems (Down Syndrome, JRA, Prematurity history, Systemic cortisone use, etc.)
If there is extreme light sensitivity….
We can change our child's future with an early eye examination. For this reason, we must have our children's eye checks done on time...
