What is Stiff Elbow?

It is a disease that occurs with loss of movement in the elbow joint, which prevents it from performing its functions. Elbow functions are important in our daily life. A very serious functional loss occurs in people who cannot move their elbow joint due to various reasons.

Patients cannot put their hands to their mouth, cannot brush their teeth, cannot comb their hair, cannot do daily care, and they feel psychologically uncomfortable due to loss of movement.

Causes of hard elbow?

The mechanism of hard elbow formation is very diverse. It may most commonly occur after a fracture in any part of the elbow joint. The risk of development is higher in patients who received conservative treatment (non-surgical) after elbow fracture and whose elbow joints remained under fixation for a long time (fixation with plaster cast). In addition, the risk of developing a hard elbow increases in patients who have undergone surgical treatment after an elbow fracture, especially if early movement is not given.

In patients who have had a head trauma and have been in intensive care, the possibility of developing a hard elbow without an elbow fracture is high, for a reason that cannot be fully explained. In addition, there are many patients who develop limitation of movement in the elbow joint after burns.

The risk of development in children is less than in adults. The patient's functions are affected according to the degree of stiffness.

CAN HARD ELBOW BE PREVENTED?

It is possible to prevent the development of stiff elbow in some cases. The elbow joint is one of the joints most susceptible to immobility. Just like the shoulder joint, it can become stiff if not moved for a long time. Therefore, in simple elbow traumas, moving the elbow joint after the patient's pain complaints subside can prevent stiffness that may develop. Surgeries performed after serious elbow fractures attempt to stabilize the elbow joint as much as possible. The aim is to obtain an elbow joint in which the fractures are stable and do not move, and to be able to start elbow joint functions early.

Failure to start elbow movements early after surgery may lead to loss of elbow joint motion to varying degrees. Early physical therapy after surgery It is important to start hunting. However, physical therapy must be done in completely competent hands. Forced movements made without being gentle on the joint can cause more harm than good
