Although there is no exact number when looking at the world population, it is known that 7-8 million women have breast prosthesis. This is a quite serious figure. Prostheses are used with various features and different sizes in every tissue. Unfortunately, many women lost their breasts due to breast cancer and had to use prostheses. There may be some problems during and after the application process of the prostheses used for aesthetic appearance.
Silicone breast prostheses They have been indispensable materials used by plastic surgeons in breast enlargement operations for many years. In the 2000s, they took their final shape and were used as prostheses filled with non-fluid, cohesive gel silicone with a rough structure.
With technological investments, some changes have been made in this rough structure and the capsular contracture phenomenon that can be seen in silicones has been greatly reduced. Capsular contracture is a hardening or even deformity that occurs as a result of silicone being perceived as a foreign body and producing a thick tissue around it. By reducing this rough structure in his prostheses to a much micro level, he managed to prevent fibroblasts from forming this hard capsule and achieved very low rates. In addition, with the ergonomic prosthesis type, the breast prosthesis, which is actually round in shape, takes the shape of a drop on the patient and provides a natural appearance. Drop prostheses are produced with a denser and harder silicone called cohesive three in order to maintain the drop shape. This feels a little stiff on the chest. This ergonomic prosthesis solves this problem and is a very soft prosthesis. Therefore, since it does not feel hard in the breast, its use is preferred for the patient and the doctor.
Another important feature of the prosthesis is that a microchip is placed inside the prosthesis. Thus, the microchip determines the identity of the prosthesis and measures the temperature increase. When the doctor puts a chip reader in his hand close to the patient's chest, he can learn all the features of the silicone, such as the model, production year and serial number, wherever he goes in the world. You do not need to carry a card, and many patients lose these cards. Measuring temperature increase is important for possible infection in the early period. It is important to detect possible temperature increases in breast cancer in the late period and the company has no information on this issue. We know that it is in scientific studies to serve as an early diagnosis tool. So, it seems that this type of prostheses will be highly preferred in the future.
As a plastic surgeon who follows innovations and is always open to self-improvement, after proving the reliability of the latest innovations, I think that I am always open to it and that it is our duty to offer the conveniences of technology to you, my patients.
