Think of a place that belongs only to you, where you are in absolute security, where you find whatever peace means to you... Your Safe Place.
The Safe Place we established with the visualization technique is one of the auxiliary or basic techniques of many schools of therapy. It is especially preferred in EMDR therapies. So what is Safe Place?
Safe Place is a fictional place that you have created or have been to before, where you can go with the animation technique that gives you confidence and peace. I prefer to go here both in anxious moments in my own life and before particularly painful sharings with my clients in meetings. We all have a Safe Place. If you want, we can go there with you now.
First of all, it is important to sit in a comfortable position. Now let's take some diaphragmatic breathing. For this, make sure that your belly turns outwards when you inhale and inwards when you exhale. If you are having difficulty, you may think that you are inflating a balloon. If you start to breathe from your diaphragm, close your eyes and continue in the same way, breathing in for 4 seconds, holding it in for 4 seconds and breathing out for 4 seconds. Take 3 sets of diaphragmatic breaths in this manner. We are ready.
Now I want you to bring a place to your mind. This could be a place you've been before or a place you've never been to. The important thing is that it belongs only to you and you feel safe there. If you think of a place you've been to before that was pleasant to you but had a few negative memories, focus elsewhere. Whatever you love in the world can be found there. For example, a seaside you have never been to, or a forest where you have camped before. Open your eyes to this place. Can you see yourself there? Try to focus on every detail there. How's the weather? Do you feel the sun touching your skin or are the raindrops wetting your hair? Is the wind blowing? Are there trees, plants, animals there? What colors catch your eye? Look at the horizon, focus as far away as possible. Whats in there? If you wish, you can call someone you trust here. This person can accompany you whenever you want. If you are ready, take a little walk there. Let's go up. Feel the ground where your feet land. Look around you as you walk, how does what you see make you feel? Is there a smell coming to your nose? Now look around you again, you can give it a name if you wish. You can stay there as long as you want. When you feel ready, take one last breath in your Safe Place and open your eyes to the present.
When you feel anxious, you can go to your Safe Place. This will always be your safe place. You can go there whenever you want. Whatever makes you feel comfortable can be found there. This place will always remain private only for you.
