Varicocele and Infertility

Varicocele is the occurrence of varicose veins, that is, enlargement, of the veins in the testicles of men. Urology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Tolga Akman gave information about varicocele.Dr. Akman said, “Generally, it does not reveal itself at mild levels. As it progresses over the years, swelling in the bags, pain, irregular sperm movements and low sperm count appear. "If it progresses too much, it may cause a decrease in the size of the testicles and disorders in the production of the male hormone testosterone," he said.

Varicocele is the cause in 40% of childless men

Saying that varicocele is a type of disease that affects 15% of men, Dr. Akman continued: “Varicocele can cause infertility and low sperm count and motility in men. Varicocele is the cause in 40% of childless men. In 80% of men who have had a child before and have not had a second or third child, the cause is varicocele. Varicocele is the expansion of the veins that collect dirty blood in the scrotum. "The only treatment for varicocele is surgery," he said.

Dr. stated that surgery will not be performed on everyone with varicocele. Akman said, “Varicocele surgery is recommended for people with impaired sperm count and motility. During the surgery, a small incision is made in the patient's groin area. The surgery can be performed with the naked eye or microscopically. "The success rate of microscopic surgery is higher and the complication rate is lower," he said. Akman, “It is normal to have swelling and pain after varicocele surgery. It may take up to 15-30 days for the swelling to subside. After the operation, we recommend not to stand for too long unless necessary and not to do any movements that will cause the muscles to contract while sitting for a long time. You should avoid situations that strain you and never lift heavy loads. You should avoid constipation. You should drink plenty of water and avoid eating heavy foods. He suggested, "You need to take a break from your sports activities for at least 2 months after varicocele surgery."

80% Improvement in Sperm Count After Varicocele Surgery It can be seen

The frequently used method in the treatment of varicocele is surgical intervention. The veins coming from the testicle are ligated during the operation performed on the groin area by expert surgeons, either visually or with a microscope. Dr. Akman: “At the end of this, there is an improvement of 70-80% in sperm count and motility. Varicocele surgery varies in duration depending on the surgical intervention performed. When the microsurgery technique is applied, the duration of the surgery lasts between 45 minutes and 1 hour for one side. The most crucial point of varicocele surgery is the protection of the artery feeding the testicle, as well as the ligation of the enlarged veins that damage the testicle. The diameter of this artery is 2 mm and it is very difficult to see it with the naked eye. However, the artery can be separated and preserved very easily with microsurgery. For this reason, microsurgery is generally the first choice of us urologists. After varicocele surgery, the patient can stand up after 6 hours. He is discharged from the hospital on the same day or the next day. "He can start working within a week," he said.
