Preventing Bad Breath

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is an unpleasant condition that makes people feel ashamed of themselves. Some individuals with bad breath are not even aware of this condition. And some people think that they have bad breath, even though they do not have bad breath. This condition is called halitophobia. If you suspect bad breath, see your dentist.

Factors that cause bad breath: These are bacteria that settle in your mouth, especially on the back of the tongue. Poorly cleaned dentures and teeth can also cause the growth of odor-causing bacteria. These bacteria metabolize food residues and dead cells in the mouth and create foul-smelling compounds.

CAUSES OF BREATHODINE
1- FOOD : Food residues accumulated between the teeth, around the gums and on the tongue can leave a bad odor. Odor-forming compounds of some foods such as garlic and onion enter the bloodstream. They are then excreted from the lungs. These odors are not of dental origin. Therefore, until the body eliminates the compounds, tooth brushing, interdental cleaning and mouthwash use will only temporarily mask bad breath.

2- TOBACCO: Tobacco products – cigarettes, pipes, cigars. - causes bad breath, discolors teeth and irritates tissues, increases your risk of cancer (especially lung and oral cancer).

3- NUTRITION: Diets can cause bad breath. Because when the body starts to break down fat and protein stores for energy, ketones, which are organic compounds, are released and these cause bad breath.

4- DRY MOUTH: Dry mouth (xerestomy) causes bad breath. Another reason is the situation. Under normal circumstances, saliva cleans the mouth and removes many particles that can cause odor. Dry mouth occurs when the flow of saliva is reduced due to various medications or problems with the salivary glands. Dry mouth is also seen in those who constantly breathe through their mouth. In addition to causing bad breath, dry mouth puts mouth breathers at risk for tooth decay.

Eğ If you complain of dry mouth, your dentist may prescribe artificial saliva for you, recommend you to increase your fluid intake or suck sugar-free, non-acidic tablets. Your dentist may also recommend fluoride application to reduce tooth decay.

5- DISEASE: Bad breath caused by the disease is possible, although less common. If bad breath occurs due to systemic conditions affecting the whole body, the underlying cause should be determined and treated.

For example, persistent bad breath or bad taste in the mouth may be a sign of gum disease. Gum disease is a condition in which plaque bacteria attack the gums and bone tissues that surround and support the teeth. It is an infection that results in tooth loss if left untreated. With regular check-ups, your dentist can identify and treat gum disease.

Ongoing bad breath can be caused by local inflammation in the trachea (nose, throat, lungs), chronic sinusitis, tonsils, chronic bronchitis, diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders, liver or kidney disorders. It may also be an indication of other medical conditions, such as frequent reflux of stomach contents or cancer of the mouth or pharynx.
