Sleep Training in Babies

Newborn babies have difficulty adapting to this new environment that they do not know at all, just as their parents have difficulty adapting to the new order. They need their mothers to relax by sucking them and to feel that warmth after 9 months of warmth. It is common for babies to wake up frequently in these first months. Mothers may have difficulty adapting to the new routine, and these frequent awakenings may cause them to feel tired, their sleep needs cannot be met, and mothers may become unhappy. Sleep training should begin when both mother and father and the baby are ready. Babies can be given sleep training after the 4th month. (There are various sleep training programs, but the month interval above when the baby is ready is the sleep training interval according to the lay-and-rise method.) Since sleep training is a process that requires patience, the mother and father must believe in this process, the child should not be put to sleep in a place other than home before the training is given, and situations that will disrupt the routine should be avoided. They should start training after meeting the avoidance and similar conditions.

SLEEP TRAINING

If your baby does not have any physical illness and the mother and father are ready to start this process, which requires patience, sleep training should be given. can be given. Approximately 2 weeks before giving your baby sleep training (more if necessary), your baby's nutrition, activity and sleep times during the day are noted. These noted habits are arranged according to the following E.A.S.Y method.

E. (Eat)= Nutrition

A. (Activity)= Activity

P. (Sleep) = Sleep

Y. (Your Time) = The time left to you

What your baby does during the day is arranged according to the routine given above. For example; The baby should not be breastfed to sleep; the baby should separate sleep and feeding. Otherwise, it needs to be breastfed or bottle fed to sleep.

SO WHAT SHOULD I DO DURING THE SLEEP TRAINING PHASE?

You should create certain habits for your baby before putting him to sleep at night, babies love order. You should not deposit at 19:00 one day and 23:00 the next day. When you put your baby to sleep at night, you can take a warm shower before putting him to bed. You can go into his room, turn off the light, and wish him good night. I do the same things every day Stubble calms your baby and signals that it is time to sleep. After creating these routines, it is time for your baby to sleep on his own in his crib and sleep soundly at night. Your baby will give you various signals when he/she is sleepy. Scratching your ear, rubbing your eyes, yawning, scratching your face, etc. When you realize that your baby is sleepy, you are ready to put him to bed. Another important point is that you should not make your baby do any very strenuous activities for 20 minutes before putting him to bed. Otherwise, you may cause your baby to lose sleep. When you take him to his room, follow the sleep routine you have created. Hold him/her calmly on your lap for 5 minutes, do not talk or shake him. Then put him to bed calmly. As your baby adapts to his old habit, he will react to you and cry or become cranky. When your baby cries, immediately take him/her in your arms and make a shush sound and gently pat his/her back with your fingers. As soon as he calms down, put him back on the bed.

When he cries again, take him in your arms and follow the same procedure. The important point here is that you should not leave him on the bed for even 5 seconds when he falls silent. It may be tiring for a few days, so you can ask for support from people who can help you. When your baby wakes up at night, you should not feed him and continue with the lay-and-lift method. When you think that you have put a baby to bed around 20:00, who has not yet switched to solid food, you should wake him up and feed him around 23:00. This is the baby's night meal and allows him to sleep comfortably. A baby who switches to solid food and is well fed during the day can sleep soundly like an adult after falling asleep at night. If your baby is under 6 months old and you are not sure that he is well fed during the day, you can breastfeed him when he wakes up 4-5 hours after his night meal. However, if he wakes up 1-2 hours after his night meal, this is not hunger but habit. In such a case, you should deposit and remove again. While giving training, you should make sure that the reason for your baby's crying is not related to a physical condition. Uninterrupted sleep for you and your baby (Do not put a baby under 6 months of age to lie down for more than half an hour.)
