Obesity Can Cause Blindness

Assoc. Prof. stated that being overweight has been an invitation to many diseases in the body since childhood. Dr. Fatih Çiftçi said that obesity may be related to blindness. Çiftçi said, "Obesity can cause many serious problems, including occlusion of the eye vessels, macular degeneration, cataract disease at an early age, and eye pressure."

Regardless of age, obesity impairs eye health as well as general body health. . Because when obesity begins in childhood, the danger becomes more serious as every moment spent with excess weight spreads throughout your life. In today's world, the number of overweight individuals is 2.1 billion, while the number of obese individuals is 700 million. These figures show how much obesity threatens human health.

"The risk of macular degeneration increases."

In the case of obesity, harmful toxins that need to be removed from the body cannot be eliminated and the kidneys, heart, Assoc. Prof. emphasized that it causes damage to the eyes, brain and vessels. Dr. Fatih Çiftçi said, “Normally, tissues have the ability to repair themselves, but as the accumulated toxins in the body increase, this regenerative ability decreases. In this case, it most commonly occurs with macular degeneration, which is associated with age. With excess weight, vascular diseases, excess cholesterol, increased fat content in the body and increased lipid levels are observed. In this process, it stimulates macular degeneration and triggers the formation of the disease and may cause the development of an aggressive type of disease. The more weight an individual has, the higher the risk of developing macular degeneration. This statement does not mean that every overweight person will suffer from macular degeneration. "If there is an underlying genetic disease, there is a difference in macular degeneration in those who are overweight or not," he said. Referring to the relationship between the disease and the disease, Çiftçi said, “Although macular degeneration does not cause blindness, it destroys central and functional vision so much that the individual cannot see the other person's face, cannot read the writing on the paper he/she is holding, cannot choose the money. In summary, he cannot perform many activities of daily life and needs help from others. Blindness is the complete absence of light. macular degeneration In those who do, the light does not disappear completely, they need someone in daily life. Macular degeneration can be stopped. The main thing is to ensure that it never starts. "A person can overcome the disease by protecting himself from factors that stimulate these genes, such as weight gain, smoking and sun," he said.

"The eye is as sensitive as the brain"

Stating that the eye is a very sensitive organ like brain tissue, Çiftçi said, “Eye vessels have a very thin structure, just like the brain and heart. Risk factors that cause vascular problems are genetics, weight, smoking and stress. If the individual is overweight in addition to the predisposition, one of the first places to experience problems is the eye organ. For this reason, overweight people experience vision loss, vascular occlusions and eye bleeding. When this situation is mentioned, people argue that many people who are not overweight also face these problems. What is at stake here are risks. "When we consider two people living in the same environment, with the same genetics, with the same stress factors, the risk of vascular occlusion is higher in those who are overweight," he said. Stating that diabetes is one of the leading diseases caused by obesity, Çiftçi said, “Eye diseases caused by diabetes are a very serious problem. If bleeding begins in the eye, bleeding continues no matter how much effort is made to correct it. Therefore, if possible, it is desirable that bleeding does not start at all. The course of diabetes in our country is that some patients do not know about their disease in the first years, deny the disease in the second period, and the disease is recognized and treated in the third period. During this lost period of approximately 15 years, the eye vessels begin to crack like water pipes. For treatment, only temporary solutions such as laser or surgery are provided. But the problem does not disappear completely. The aim here is to prolong the time of occurrence of blindness as much as possible if it is to be protected. "Even if the person later loses weight and lowers his blood sugar, the possibility of reversing the 15-year eye damage is low," he said.

Obesity Stating that it causes high blood pressure, Çiftçi said, “One of the worst known eye diseases is eye pressure. Eye pressure destroys the optic nerve, which provides transmission between the brain and the eye. Even if the individual's lens, retina and eyeball are healthy, the light entering the eye is not transmitted to the brain. Since light cannot be transmitted to the brain, it does not perceive what is seen. Complete loss of light occurs in the eye. In macular degeneration, there is no complete loss of light and the patient can see from the edges. "While cataracts can be resolved with surgery, in cases of vision loss due to eye pressure, treatments such as surgery, laser or medication are ineffective, and it is very difficult to correct vision loss," he explained.
