Impacted Wisdom Tooth

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are third molars that are completely impacted, partially impacted or completely erupted. These fully impacted or semi-impacted wisdom teeth can cause caries, gingivitis, cyst formations when they come into contact with neighboring teeth, and they can also cause tooth alignment to deteriorate as a result of the pressure they exert. Impacted wisdom teeth are teeth that have not erupted fully and are located at the very back of the jaw. There are a total of 4 wisdom teeth, two in the upper and lower jaw. In some people, this number is less than four, but it may not occur at all.

The lack of sufficient space in the lower or upper jaw bone for wisdom teeth to erupt and the wisdom tooth being positioned in a very different place than normal may lead to partial eruption of these teeth or It may cause them all to remain buried. These teeth need to be extracted if they form a cystic structure due to caries, gingivitis, tissue damage, or disrupt the alignment of the teeth on the neighboring teeth.

Wisdom teeth, which are the third molars and usually develop before the age of 25, may cause the following problems: :

-Wisdom teeth, which are partially exposed to the oral environment due to their poor position, retain food. This causes tooth decay and odor as bacteria multiply.

- Partially erupted teeth make brushing or flossing difficult because they cannot find a place properly.

- Partially erupted wisdom teeth. They create an environment for bacteria to enter the gums. This increases the risk of infection, causing pain and swelling in the jaw.

-Wisdom teeth that cannot find enough space to emerge push other teeth, causing congestion.

-Cyst around the impacted or semi-buried tooth. is likely to occur. This cyst not only damages the roots of neighboring teeth over time, but also erodes the bone to which the teeth are attached.

How to Understand Whether a Wisdom Tooth Will Be Extracted?

Wisdom teeth also affect neighboring teeth. During the examination, your doctor should check whether healthy teeth are damaged, whether there is pain and infection, cyst or tumor formation, infectious teeth, etc. It can decide this by looking at many different parameters, such as whether it carries an ion risk or not. Due to the problems it causes, wisdom teeth often need to be removed for a healthier mouth in the long term. Although wisdom teeth do not cause pain, they may carry the potential for disease. It can cause many different problems because it creates oral hygiene problems. Your physician can tell you all the details during the examination and tell you whether the wisdom tooth should be extracted or not.
