Have you ever thought that our procrastination behavior lies behind the crises we experience and the burdens we carry on our backs?
When we examine the structure of the problems, we see that the problems do not arise suddenly, just like a fruit, it is necessary for that problem to emerge. Some grounds and necessary time must be created.
To concretize some of the problems we experience, for example: weight gain (obesity) problem, communication problem, not being able to manage time well in a serious part of the problems we experience, including divorce and separation decisions in relationships. Procrastination plays a role. So, how does procrastination disease occur? Let's examine it.
• Obsessive desire to do a job perfectly,
• Lack of motivation,
• Anxiety, many failure scenarios that the person will fail. The belief that this scenario will come true if he starts writing in his mind and starts working leads him to postpone his work.
• Lack of experience and knowledge about time management,
• Depending on the person's individual abilities, skills and Imposing assignments, tasks and working methods that are not suitable for the person's working style, studies and projects that are not characterized according to the inflexible person make the person feel very inadequate. The person is so sure that he will encounter failure at the end of this process that what he is actually postponing is not the work but the thought of failure.
• The person is not lazy, he just postpones it to do a better job. This is a very important distinction. A person does not run away from work, he runs away from failure. Albert Einstein's words on this subject explain the situation very well. "If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its whole life believing that it is stupid." not being able to work on a scheduled basis and not being able to manage time,
• Creating tension for the person about starting work. Think of an athlete; He is an Olympic athlete and tried for hours to get the best position on the running line to finish the race first. Think about it. It may seem funny, but it is a metaphor that summarizes the situation experienced by people with procrastination problems. A person focuses so much on the best result that even after everyone starts and finishes running, he still thinks 'How can I do the best run?'. • It is necessary to understand well the concept that psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik calls "Zeigarnik Effect" at this point. When a job is started, the brain wants to finish it, and as long as that job is left unfinished, the brain experiences tension in this regard. • As an old proverb says, if you have started a job, you have finished half of the job. It is very important at this point for the person to motivate himself. Psychologically, the rewards will make the person feel more motivated and successful, so the person will work more efficiently and willingly. In this way, he will raise the bar of his work even further with motivating rewards and relaxing breaks.
• In fact, one of the most important things that affect our performance is our perceptions. Sometimes, while thinking about doing a job, we think about doing the entire job at once and create mental fatigue for ourselves. However, if a person breaks the task into smaller parts, he will work much more easily and produce a good job. If we go deeper, we can take it to the point that in conflict families, the child cannot create peace at home despite doing his best.
So what can we do to solve this problem, let's examine them item by item:
1. Dividing the work we will do into parts will enable us to show the best performance in terms of using our power proportionately and balancedly.
2. For a perfect result, a person can get lost in endless thoughts. For example, the first move in a chess game has a very special meaning. Imagine a player who wants to play very well and thinks about the best move for months. What a paradox, isn't it? Playing the best game, on the other hand, is actually never having played a game... The good work we need to do here is actually a process. It's his job. You can produce the best work with the interventions you make during the process. Nazım Hikmet's poem has a very special meaning on this subject:
"The most beautiful sea:
is the one that has not been visited yet.
The most beautiful child:
has not grown up yet.
br /> Our best days are:
the ones we haven't experienced yet.
And the most beautiful word I want to say to you:
is the word I haven't said yet..."
In other words, "the best and perfect” is actually like the phoenix, it is there but we can never reach it. Even if you do your best, it will still be your best, so start, do your best work once you start. Think of the sculptor, they strike the first blow, but over time, they chip away at a perfect work.
3. Do research on time management. You can think of it as a medicine. Many people use the same medicine, but they all have different effects and side effects. So research and create the best study method and time management for yourself. Facing inefficiencies in regular work systems may feed your procrastination side. You should pay close attention to this point.
4. Identify the objects and topics that distract you. While thinking about these objects and topics, there may be points you miss. That's why I suggest the following method: Take a detailed inventory of a day when you postponed a task, what you were interested in that day, what food and drinks you consumed, how you spent your time, list these in detail, and then, when you think about it, add the titles and topics that come to your mind to this list, one by one. Consider it under headings. Procrastination is a behavior, so even in the process of solving this problem, there will be times when you will enter this cycle again and again, but your belief in change and conscious work will make it possible for you to break this cycle.
5. Remember that the work you do is valuable and long-term. Draw road maps for yourself. You will enjoy your work much more when you know that the work you do and the efforts you put in lead you to higher places and to do much higher quality work.
6. Ask yourself questions. Asking questions stimulates the flow of thought in the brain. It is a method that seriously affects communication. Asking questions is one of the most important steps in learning. By asking questions, we learn about the world, ourselves and many things. The questions you ask should open new doors and paths like river beds where new thoughts flow. To give an example: How can I make this work better? How should I spend my day to do this job in the time I want? With questions like these, you can create new ways of thinking in your brain and get better results.
7. The brain gets tired. Yes, you heard right, the brain also gets tired and needs to rest. If you think that productive work starts at the desk, you are wrong. Draw big circles, use a board, or write a list of priorities on a blank sheet of paper. Because when the brain focuses on more than one subject at the same time, performance decreases significantly. Share the work within the circles you draw. What will you need for the job that you have divided into sections for your convenience? It will also be very useful to divide your work into sections in terms of time and set separate periods for each. You will be surprised to see how far you have come in terms of time management and how well you can do a good job in a month of working this way.
Let's end with a saying that seems simple but at the same time summarizes a serious philosophy: "The worst decision It's better than indecision."
