Asst.Prof.Dr. Onur Okan Demirci said, "Stress can be defined as a person's reaction to external factors that challenge the way of coping. When it is at a certain level, it may have a role that motivates the person and enables him to take precautions against threatening factors. However, when it is excessive or chronic, the person's psychological or biological It is clear that it will cause wear and tear and various psychiatric problems. A significant part of our daily life is spent at work. The stress experienced at work is definitely related to working conditions. However, individual factors, for example; ways of coping with stress due to personality characteristics, family life or other social factors. "Support resources and difficulties experienced in roles undertaken in other areas of life affect work stress," he said. On the other hand, Dr. stated that the stress experienced at work reflects on a person's other areas of life. Demirci said, "We can control working conditions to a certain extent; therefore, instead of setting new goals even in difficult conditions, we should first focus on the idea that we can cope with these conditions. Ignoring the symptoms of work stress causes more serious mental and physical problems."
Noting that depression and anxiety disorders are conditions that can develop if no precautions are taken against work stress, Dr. Demirci said, "Anxiety, insomnia, social withdrawal, efforts to cope with alcohol or inappropriate drug use for anxiety or sleep problems without professional support, and additional problems that develop as a result, physical complaints such as headaches and problems with the digestive system, are the causes of work stress." These are common reflections. Failure to take precautions in this regard may lead to the development of burnout syndrome, especially if personality traits create a predisposition (as in people who are anxious, perfectionist, introvert, and not open to new experiences). In this case, the person feels inadequate, unsupported and insecure. Depersonalization towards work , not wanting to go to work, decrease in work efficiency, intolerance occurs. Burnout reflects on the person's family and social life. Since it can affect the person's mental health, and therefore family and social life, some coping methods should be used and necessary to prevent work stress. If it is dirty, professional help is required. "Sometimes simple measures to be taken can be effective in preventing major problems that may develop," he said.
Assistant Professor Onur Okan Demirci listed the ways to cope with work stress as follows:
" Arrive at work earlier than you are supposed to start. Reviewing the daily tasks to be done or experiencing peace for a while in a busy environment will increase motivation. Go to work feeling sleepy, quality sleep is important for coping with stress and concentration. Taking care of yourself does not mean changing your lifestyle. Regular nutrition and exercise will make you feel energetic in daily life and make you stronger in coping with problems. Regular alcohol use with the expectation of getting away from work stress disrupts the sleep rhythm and makes it difficult to start the day. This situation creates a risk for alcohol addiction. Likewise, medications used without professional help for stress-related sleep problems or anxiety; It may cause increased anxiety and decreased productivity during the day. You should consult a psychiatrist to have your medication needs evaluated. Don't neglect your own physical and spiritual needs by focusing only on work. Your soul needs nourishment, a life focused solely on work will not nourish your soul. You must balance the time you spend with your family and friends with the time you spend at work. Remember that effective communication with the people you love will have a positive impact on all areas of life. You must strike a good balance between what needs to be done at work and what is mandatory. Sometimes you may be condensing the list of obligations. Remember that there are people at work with whom you can share duties and responsibilities. Not every step may be under your control. Determining the priority things you need to do at work and prioritizing the things you don't like will reduce tension for the rest of the day. Positive communication with the people you work with is an important factor in reducing work stress. Sharing common problems can comfort you and increase your awareness of different ways to cope. But like many things, we cannot control how others perceive events. Professional life balances the two It requires good installation. Knowing that people can perceive problems differently and sometimes rather than the stress on them; It is important to remember that we need to focus on our own thoughts and feelings. We cannot complete everything we do perfectly. We can make mistakes, and some mistakes have multiple components; If the error is related to us, we learn the source and try to prevent it from happening again. Errors that occur may be related to the operation or corporate structure, we should share this situation with the employer or management staff. This sharing will increase individual and corporate efficiency. In case of problems with auxiliary personnel; expression of expectations but also exchange of ideas on current difficulties in functioning; It plays an important role in reducing workload, resolving conflicts in the work environment and increasing job satisfaction. In conflicts that occur with people working together; It is important to try to understand the emotions of the other person along with our own emotions through verbal or behavioral clues, and to focus on the moment by getting rid of the emotions created by past experiences with these people. Sometimes, even if we disagree, it will be useful to end the conflict if it continues."
