Gynecomastia is the enlargement of the male breast and its appearance similar to the female breast. It is a problem observed in almost half of the male population. Since it feminizes men's bodies, it negatively affects their mental state and causes discomfort, especially in the summer months. Gynecomastia may occur due to excessive weight gain, as well as as a result of some hormonal disorders or as a side effect of some medications
- In Which Situations Does Gynecomastia Occur?
Gynecomastia often occurs when the level of estrogen (female hormone) in the body increases and the level of testosterone (male hormone) decreases. This condition occurs physiologically in infants, adolescents and the elderly. Gynecomastia is observed in 40% of adolescents and 35% of older men. Most gynecomastia during adolescence disappears within a few years. Apart from this, gynecomastia can be observed in various hormone disorders, some types of cancer, especially lung cancer, and systemic diseases such as AIDS. Various heart medications, cancer medications, hormone-containing medications and drugs can also cause gynecomastia. The condition in which the breast appears large due to fat accumulation without enlargement of the mammary gland, which occurs due to obesity, is called pseudo-gynecomastia. Pseudo-gynecomastia is also a very common problem.
- How to Treat a Patient with Gynecomastia?
First, the cause of gynecomastia must be understood. If the patient is thought to have a hormone disorder, he or she is first evaluated by an Endocrinologist. Hormone tests are performed. If there is a disorder, treatment is given accordingly. In cases of gynecomastia occurring during adolescence, waiting is usually sufficient. Most of these will resolve within a few years. Gynecomastia other than these can be corrected by surgical procedures.
- What are the Surgical Methods?
In the majority of patients with gynecomastia, liposuction alone yields sufficient results. It is possible to receive. Follow the removal of fat, especially with laser liposuction. Results may be more satisfactory as skin tightening is also achieved. In cases where this is not sufficient, excess breast tissue is removed with a short incision made around the nipple. In patients with excess skin and surrounding the nipple, the skin is removed so that the scar remains around the nipple.

As in all surgeries, in gynecomastia surgery, it is necessary to stop smoking and blood thinners such as aspirin 2~3 weeks before the surgery. It has a blood thinning effect when consumed.

In cases of gynecomastia where growth in the gland tissue predominates, the surgery is performed under general anesthesia. It is performed under the operating room environment. Cases where only liposuction will be performed can also be performed with sedation.
- What Happens After Gynecomastia Surgery?

You can take a bath after three days. He can go for a check-up after three days and then return to work and start his normal daily activities. You should not do any sports other than walking for the first 3 weeks. After the third week, he/she can do all sports activities except arm and chest movements. After the sixth week, all kinds of sports activities are allowed. In the first days after the surgery, the breasts will be edematous and hard, and there may be bruises. Bruises disappear at the end of the first week. Swelling and stiffness are evident in the first 3 weeks. After the third week, the swelling regresses rapidly. Breasts take their full shape only in the third month. Procedures such as lymph drainage and radiofrequency can be applied after the third week to accelerate the reduction of edema. Subsequent checks are made at the end of the 3rd week, 3rd month, 6th month and the first year, unless there is a special situation.
