Abdominal Aortic aneurysms

Abdominal aortic aneurysms are usually detected incidentally during abdominal ultrasonography or computed tomography examinations performed due to diseases of other organs in the abdomen. is done. Although detection is possible with an abdominal examination in thin people, the simplest and cheapest examination method in obese people or in aneurysms of a size that is not yet possible to detect manually is abdominal ultrasonography. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance methods are other examination methods used in diagnosis.

Rupture occurs when the diameter of the aortic vessel, whose normal diameter is around 1.8-2.2cm, exceeds 5cm In other words, the risk of rupture increases significantly.

Small diameter aneurysms, such as 6 months or 1 year. They are monitored with ultrasound at regular intervals. In case of a sudden increase in diameter, additional examinations or interventions may be required. Today, interventions are applied with 2 different methods;

1-Open Operation: It is the process of opening the abdomen or ribcage, stopping the circulation from the upper and lower parts of the area where the vein is enlarged, and replacing the enlarged vein with an artificial vein. It can generally be applied with a 6-8% risk of death.

2-Closed “Endovascular” method: Generally, the groin areas are opened and angiography is performed intravenously through the groin vein into the abdomen or into the enlarged vein area into the chest cavity. It is the process of inserting an artificial vein, supported by a stent, between the upper and lower parts of the enlarged vein, which is reached with catheter systems and can be applied with an approximately 1-2% risk of death.

Which of these two methods will be applied to which patient and to which aneurysm? The decision is made by taking into account the anatomical structure of the vessels, the patient's age and additional diseases.

After the operation, approximately A recovery period of 2-3 months is required. This period consists of not lifting more than 5kg and a rest period accompanied by regular walks.

Risk factors such as smoking, hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, overweight must be controlled with the help of a physician
