THINGS TO WONDER ABOUT INGUINAL HERNIA

What is an Inguinal Hernia?

Abdominal wall hernias seen in the groin area are called inguinal hernias. It is the most common hernia type with a rate of 90% among abdominal wall hernias. It is approximately 9 times more common in men than in women. There are three different types of inguinal hernia: indirect, direct and femoral hernia. Indirect hernias are congenital and occur when the inguinal canal remains open or opens later; It is more common in children and young people. Direct hernias occur as a result of the muscle and connective tissue in the groin area weakening and opening for various reasons. It is more common in athletes and older people. Femoral hernias are more common in women and occur as a result of the widening of the canal through which the main vessels and nerve structures leading to the leg pass. Hernias can appear in various sizes, from small ones that do not show many signs and symptoms during normal physical examination and can be diagnosed with imaging methods, which we call point hernia, to giant size ones, which we call scrotal hernia.

How Does a Hernia Occur? ?

It occurs due to increased intra-abdominal pressure, defects in the connective tissue structure and congenital reasons. The inguinal canal, where the testicles move from the abdomen to the scrotum, normally closes after birth. If the canal does not close due to a congenital defect or closes imperfectly, it can occur in childhood and adulthood. Indirect hernia occurs. Direct inguinal hernia occurs in older people as a result of rupture in the groin area due to reasons such as heavy lifting, strenuous sports, chronic cough, difficulty urinating (prostate enlargement), which increases intra-abdominal pressure. Femoral hernia usually occurs in women due to increased intra-abdominal pressure. Intra-abdominal pressure increases. Its increase is not the only reason. Insufficiency or weakness of the person's connective and muscle tissue also contributes to the formation of hernia.

How is Hernia Treated?

The treatment of hernia is surgery. But Before surgery, causes that increase intra-abdominal pressure, such as chronic cough and prostate enlargement, should be treated first and recurrences should be prevented. The surgery is performed with open and closed techniques. In the repair, the hernia is repaired either with the person's own tissues or by using a patch. My day. Closed methods have become preferred due to the advantages of less post-operative pain, less recurrence rate, less hospital stay and early return to work. In the closed method, two techniques are used. In the TAP technique, hernia repair is from inside the abdomen, and in TEP technique, hernia repair is from the front of the abdominal membrane without entering the abdomen. In both methods, a synthetic patch is used. In the open technique, the inguinal canal is opened and the repair is made with or without the use of a patch. In all methods, there is a slight risk of recurrence of the disease.
