Do you stop for a moment and examine the events happening around you? I do it from time to time. What do I feel?
We know and make sense of the world with our senses and perceptions, and as a result, we create our behaviors. Our senses first start to work with the theory of monitoring information in response to stimuli from the environment, and we have 7 sensory systems developed for this. If we place these systems in a pyramid, we need to place the Vestibular system, Tactile system and Propioceptive system at the base of the pyramid. These first 3 systems must be developed so that the other systems can function adequately. Our other systems are; Taste, vision, hearing and smell are our sensory systems.
Each individual has their own characteristics. While each of us has different senses, some of us do not have sufficient functionality. Sensory integration is a technique that helps to make our senses functional, which causes the problem of participating in daily life.
The 7 sensory systems we have work independently of each other and show differences within themselves. In some individuals, one system may be overly sensitive, while another system may be undersensitive. What is important is the harmony between systems and therefore with the environment.
We grow and develop from the moment we are born, even from the womb. It has been shown that 700 synapses, or connections, are formed in brain cells every 1 second while in the womb. This is called brain plasticity, that is, the brain's capacity to form new connections. When the child reaches the age of 2-3, the connection capacity of the brain is 2-3 times that of the adult brain. So what happens next? Especially from adolescence onwards, unused information is lost, this is called pruning. For this reason, the childhood period of 0-6 years is a very important period and it is important for every pediatrician to inform us during this period.
Our senses accompany us from the moment we are born. Including our senses in our approach to children and establishing emotional communication with them is an important developmental step, especially for an individual trying to get to know himself and the world. Although there is no magic yet that will realize this development in the most perfect way, there is a magic word; affect, that is, communication signals. What are communication signals? How to use ir? In fact, we all use it naturally; these are our facial expressions and expressions of enthusiasm. We need affect in our communication. It is very important to use communication signals for effective communication, especially with children. Children have tremendous face reading skills, better than us adults. However, since each of us has different senses and perceptions, communication signals will also be different. This is the color of personality and communication.
