Why and How Should Breast Biopsy Be Performed?

Breast biopsy is a type of test performed by removing tissue or fluid from a suspicious area of the breast. The presence of breast cancer can be investigated by examining the removed sample under a microscope. Biopsy is the only diagnostic procedure that definitively determines whether a suspicious area in the breast is cancerous or not.

The doctor examines the appearance of the suspicious area in the breast from various biopsy methods such as fine needle biopsy, thick needle biopsy or less frequently used incisional and excisional biopsy, It decides which type of biopsy will be performed according to its size and location.

In this method, after local anesthesia of the breast, tissue and fluid samples are taken from the suspicious part of the breast with special needles. If the presence of breast cancer is detected as a result of examination of these samples, surgery and other treatment options come to the fore.

It should be known that no cancerous cells are seen in approximately 80% of women who undergo biopsy, but with this method, breast cancer can be detected. It should not be ignored that if it is detected, a definitive diagnosis is made and treatment is started as soon as possible and good results are obtained.
