Every disease that affects women's health concerns gynecologists. Depression
is a common and serious illness in women. For this reason, I ask questions about depression in my patients who apply to my clinic. In fact, depression is different from short-term sadness or mourning after losing someone. Depression changes your thoughts and emotions, as well as affecting your behavior and physical
health. It can occur at different ages or after different situations. It can also occur with other diseases.
Depression causes both physical and emotional symptoms in the person. If you experience
five of the symptoms I wrote below, at certain times of the day or every day for two weeks, it means that you have depression. One of your symptoms must be sadness, low mood, or not being able to enjoy things you used to enjoy.
Sadness or emotional depression

There are different levels of depression. It can be light, medium or heavy. It means mild depression; You put in extra effort to do the things you
have to do, but still be able to go about your
daily life. Although people with moderate depression can continue their lives, they cannot fulfill some of their responsibilities. If the person is severely depressed, he cannot perform most of the tasks he needs to do in his daily life.
It is not known exactly what causes depression. It is known that depression is a brain disease
and that the part of the brain related to emotion, sleep or thinking has functioning problems.
The unbalanced presence of some substances in the brain causes depression.
Some factors. It may facilitate depression. For example, if there is depression in your family, it will genetically affect you and increase your chances of having depression. Hormonal changes such as menopause may also cause depression in women. Alcohol or substance abuse or having a long-term illness, such as chronic groin pain, cause the development of depression.
Your physician diagnoses depression by evaluating your symptoms. Your physician evaluates issues such as the medications you use, your diseases, your alcohol use, and diagnoses whether you have depression.
Depression is a treatable disease. Treatment by receiving psychological support is called psychotherapy.
Or medications called antidepressants can be used.
In psychotherapy treatment, treatment is done by talking to a psychologist. Attempts are made to reduce your symptoms
by changing your behavior. Treatment is planned individually, in a group, or through meetings attended by your spouse if you are married.

effect of the drugs. The side effects of these drugs are temporary and
short-term. Headache, nausea, difficulty falling asleep or waking up in the morning, decreased sexual desire, difficulty in orgasm, feeling angry and tense are some of these side effects.
Antidepressant use in adolescents or young adults may increase suicidal thoughts. and it has been observed to increase
initiative. Therefore, close follow-up by the physician is very important.
Some people believe that medicinal plants, such as St. John's wort, are good for depression. Studies have shown that St. John's wort does not have a therapeutic effect on serious depression. In fact, its
use reduces the effect of other drugs on the body, such as heart medications, drugs used for seizures or birth
control pills.
Depression during pregnancy affects the health of both the pregnant woman and the baby. Pregnant women with severe depression
may not be able to care for themselves. They have problems feeding or resting. It causes problems such as
depression during pregnancy, premature birth, birth of an underweight baby, and postpartum problems.
The negative effect of antidepressant use during pregnancy on the baby is very low. The period when the baby will be most affected by the drug used during pregnancy is between the 8th and 13th week of pregnancy. People who used antidepressants before pregnancy
should discuss with their physician whether they should continue their medications during pregnancy. Women who used more than one anti-depressant pill before pregnancy can switch to another pill during pregnancy.
