Oral Care During Orthodontic Treatment

We can have a beautiful smile thanks to orthodontic treatment, but in this process, we must pay more attention to our teeth and oral care than ever before. Because additional orthodontic devices used in the mouth make it difficult to maintain oral hygiene.

The brackets and wires used on the teeth during orthodontic treatment create an environment for food residues to adhere. When these food residues are not cleaned from around the brackets, harmful microorganisms in the bacterial plaque cause tooth decay, gingivitis and damage to the structure of the tooth enamel under the brackets. Additionally, at the end of the treatment, white spots called bruises or white spot lesions may occur in the area under the bracket. Solving these problems will bring extra time and cost and extend the treatment period.

To prevent all these complications, we need to follow some oral care rules and pay special attention to this issue.

The Right Toothbrush. Selection

During orthodontic treatment, we want the space between and around the brackets to be well clean. It is recommended to use two types of brushes for this purpose. The first is usually a flat model toothbrush with a soft tip, small head and a small head. Some brands on the market have brushes produced for orthodontic treatment with these features. With this brush, each tooth with brackets should be brushed thoroughly from top to bottom, from bottom to top and from top to bottom, and from top to bottom, right and left, at a 45-degree angle to the brackets. Secondly, we should brush between the brackets and wires from several different directions, preferably with an interdental brush in the form of a pine tree. People who do not receive orthodontic treatment should normally brush their teeth 3 times a day. If we have braces in our mouth, this process should be applied twice or thrice.

Four Stages of Oral Care

“The environment where we do oral care should be bright.”

1. In the first stage, all tooth surfaces should be thoroughly brushed with an orthodontic toothbrush with light and gentle movements,

2. In the second stage, the remaining residues that the toothbrush cannot clean are removed with a suitable interdental brush.

3. Ü In the third stage, the plaques under the gums are cleaned with the help of dental floss or preferably an oral irrigator,

4. In the fourth stage, oral care is completed with a mouthwash suitable for your treatment.

As a result, no one wants rotten teeth after the orthodontic treatment you receive to eliminate crooked teeth. Crooked but healthy teeth are preferred rather than having rotten but straight teeth. The best thing is to have healthy and straight teeth at the end of your orthodontic treatment.
