However, sleep apnea can turn life into a nightmare. Snoring during sleep is a big problem, since the snorer is not aware of it, people sleeping in the same room with him are disturbed. "In fact, not only the same room but also the same house and even the neighbors may be disturbed by snoring," he said.
Dr. stated that snoring negatively affects social environments and family life by making noise. Yıldırım said, "However, there is also an invisible side to this. The shortness of breath that accompanies snoring seriously affects the health of the person. We call this sleep apnea, that is, the state of stopping or interruption of breathing during sleep. When breathing is stopped during sleep, the body's oxygen need is not met and important organs, especially the heart and brain, are affected first. Apart from these organs, hormone structure is disrupted, blood vessels are affected, blood pressure increases. Symptoms of people with sleep apnea during the day are as follows: They have difficulty getting up in the morning, become forgetful, get angry quickly, tend to sleep constantly during the day, feel tired in their seat, on the couch, behind the wheel. "He falls asleep at work, sweats a lot, and gains weight. Sleep apnea is especially increased by nasal congestion, nasal congestion, adenoids, sagging soft palate, enlargement of tonsils, enlargement of the base of the tongue, chin being held back, being short-necked, and being overweight," he said.
First of all, in the treatment of sleep apnea; Dr. noted that overweight people should lose weight. Yıldırım said, "Those with nasal congestion should have a nose operation, those with sagging in the soft palate and uvula should be shortened and corrected, growth at the base of the tongue and misalignment in the chin should be corrected. Sleep apnea should be evaluated within a multidisciplinary team. In order to make the correct diagnosis and treatment, a sleep test should be performed first. "A detailed Ear, Nose and Throat examination should be performed," he said.
