Joint Problems

The jaw joint is a complex structure consisting of many components. Movement in the jaw joint; If the bones forming the joint heads, the space between the bones, the joint fluid and the structure including the disc, joint capsule, ligaments, chewing muscles and teeth are in harmony, it progresses smoothly. However, when there is a problem in any of the joint components, a strain begins in the movements and another component may be affected accordingly. For example, in a patient with clenched teeth, the chewing muscles work too actively, pain may occur in the muscles, but the most affected structure is the teeth and abrasions begin on the tooth surfaces. When there is a disease related to the joint, first of all, it is necessary to determine the structure where this disease originates and to create the treatment plan accordingly. Discomforts can be caused by excessive activity of the masticatory muscles in the simplest form, as well as by injury in the joint capsule and ligaments after a trauma, displacement of the disc or degenerative disorders in the bone structure of the joint heads. Although clenching is psychological in most people, it can also be caused by a high filling or a closing disorder involving the entire mouth. In the treatment of these disorders, drug use, regulation of some habits related to daily life, intra-articular washing, injection (arthrocentesis), PRP application, night plate making, botox application, physical therapy or psychiatric counseling can be applied. The treatment plan is made by evaluating the patient's specific complaints and the structures in which the disease originates and affects. In addition to joint treatment, it may be necessary to treat the teeth and restore the lost vertical dimension in patients who have been clenching their teeth for a long time and have advanced wear on the teeth. If the joint discomfort is caused by a closing disorder, the jaws and teeth are not in an ideal position relative to each other, it may be necessary to plan a multidisciplinary treatment with the inclusion of orthodontic treatment in joint treatment.
