Measures to be taken to reduce dust in the homes of our patients with house dust allergies are listed below:
1) Synthetic mattresses, quilts and pillows should be used, washed and changed regularly, and covered with zippered airtight covers. Bird feathers and wool should not be used.
2) All clothes should be stored in closed cabinets.
3) The use of fabric curtains should be avoided. Blinds can be used instead. If curtains are used, they should be washed frequently.
4) Fabric-covered furniture should not be used. Plastic and wooden chairs should be preferred.
5) Blankets should be washed in hot water every two weeks and the use of wool blankets should be avoided.
6) H.E.P.A. Air purifiers with filters can remove dust particles from the air. The air-condition filter should be replaced or washed every 2 weeks. Fans are ineffective.
7) Air conditioners prevent the growth of mites because they control humidity and temperature.
8) Things that will attract dust, such as fabric panels and macrame, should not be hung on the walls.
9) Cabinets, including the inside, should be wiped with a damp cloth, and toys (especially furry ones) and books in the room should be removed. It is necessary to use a mask when making the bed or cleaning the bedroom.
10) If a humidifier is used in the room, excessive humidity should be avoided. Because mites grow best at 70-80% humidity. They cannot survive at 50% or lower humidity.
11) All carpets in the bedroom should be removed. Floors should be covered with wood, linoleum, etc. Floors should be wiped every day with a wet cloth. Cleaning the carpets with a vacuum cleaner does not eliminate the mites, but it can reduce them.
12) Windows should not be opened, especially in the early morning hours, during the spring months when the pollen season begins. Children playing outside during seasons when pollen is high should change their clothes when they come home, and the clothes should not be left in the bedroom.
13) Bathrooms are the most suitable environments for fungi to grow. For this reason, it should be kept dry.
