Can I Prevent Pregnancy Stretch Marks?

The abdominal stretch marks, which we see on the abdomen, hips, hips and breasts after the 6th months of pregnancy and whose scientific name is "stria gravidarum", are a disease that affects expectant mothers cosmetically, although they do not harm the mother's health or the baby. They are generally pink or purple-lilac colored lesions that manifest themselves with areas such as cracks and widening in the skin.

Is it seen only in pregnant women?

Actually, no. This type of skin cracks can be seen especially in adrenal diseases, the use of certain drugs called steroids, and excessive obesity. It occurs due to excessive cortisone production in adrenal gland diseases called Cushing Syndrome. Although the cause of these cracks cannot be fully explained in studies, it is assumed that they occur as a result of deteriorations, decreases and ruptures in the structure of the main layers, which we call collagen and elastin fibrils in the skin. Pregnancy cracks occur at a rate of 55-60% in first pregnancies.

What should I do?

You can reduce the possibility and severity of these stretch marks with suitable products, especially from the 5th month of pregnancy. You should talk to your doctor and get information about this. Although there is no 100% effective and definitive preventive treatment for pregnancy stretch marks, there are methods that can reduce their severity and leave fewer scars. Although the pathophysiology is complex, you can be less affected by appropriate treatments before stretch marks appear, and after pregnancy, you can make these stretch marks invisible with the technologies and special laser methods developed by cosmetology.

During pregnancy, the first lesions develop in pink-purple color, and skin opening occurs especially in the abdomen, belly, hips and breasts. This process is accompanied by itching. These cracks, which are pink-purple in color throughout pregnancy, are 2-5 cm long and 2-4 mm wide. As hormones return to normal after pregnancy, their colors fade and they begin to become colorless or brighter than skin-colored. After this stage, with the support of cosmetology, these lesions are tried to be erased and destroyed with special methods. However, this is a little more difficult. and it takes time. Unfortunately, it is difficult for the skin to return completely to normal.

Expectant mothers, especially those whose families, mothers and siblings have frequent pregnancy cracks, need to be more careful.

This is why preventive and reducing methods are becoming more important. The most useful tasks you should do for this purpose are;

  • You should get information from your doctor about gels and creams specially developed against pregnancy stretch marks

  • You should drink plenty of water

  • You should do sports that reduce skin tension, such as walking and swimming.

  • You should not gain excess and uncontrolled weight during your pregnancy. You should finish the pregnancy with the ideal weight.

  • The main purpose of these recommendations will be to prevent the tearing and rupture of the collagen tissue underlying the formation of stretch marks. But unfortunately, today, no treatment, cream or precaution is insufficient to definitively and completely prevent these annoying stretch marks that occur during pregnancy. There is no complete and definitive treatment. With appropriate treatments, you can reduce these effects and get rid of less permanent skin cracks. After stretch marks appear, solutions such as laser, chemical peeling and dermoabrasion-skin peeling, and retinoic acid injections can be offered after birth and puerperium.
