Mental Health in Corona Days

Dear teacher Assoc. Dr. I would like to start with a quote from Mehmet Bilgin. "There are always problems in life. The important thing is not what the problem is, but how we can deal with it."

As long as we live in a world that treats humans as social beings, problems become inevitable parts of our lives. It is not possible to talk about a person or any society that does not experience problems. Humanity has lived with many disasters for many centuries. Epidemic diseases are one of the disasters that affect the course of world history. Now, we are in the middle of a worldwide epidemic called Covid-19 (corona virus), which we have not even heard of before.

So, in this frightening time we live in, we need to fight against the coronavirus, which has managed to affect people extremely negatively, especially psychologically. How will we protect our health?

First of all, I must say that you are not alone in your concerns. We all experience similar situations. The only thing that is different in the similar situation we experience is our reactions to these situations. One of the things that scares us, worries us the most, or stresses us out and causes us to react differently is uncertainty. When the human brain encounters an uncertain situation, it writes many dysfunctional scenarios and believes that these scenarios will come true. The coronavirus is also an invisible enemy for our brain. Our brain writes various scenarios about this enemy that it cannot see and believes that these will come true. In fact, there is only one truth at this point: these scenarios are our brain's trick on us and they are dysfunctional negative thoughts.

One of the most important rules for managing this process is to control our emotions and thoughts by increasing our knowledge of the situation. Trying to focus on more realistic thoughts instead of negative and unrealistic thoughts and being open and clear about what we experience helps us to fully cope with the problems we face. Yes, we are going through a difficult period full of unknowns, but everything could be much worse. Let's not forget that a tree that remains bare throughout the winter blooms in spring. Life's own control Concentrating on the parts of your body also makes you feel good. Focusing on the present rather than the past or future is important to protect our psychological health, and one of the things that can be done for this is to set small goals that you can achieve. One of the things required to manage the process is to be aware of what is going on. In this case, the reliability of the news source and the follow-up time are also important. Cutting off contact with social media news, especially at night, will positively affect your sleep by preventing the negative thoughts your mind will create. Finally, keep in mind that everything that is good for your body will also have good results for your psychology and take good care of your body. Remember that "There are always problems in life, the important thing is not what the problem is, but how we can deal with it."
