Psychiatrist Prof. evaluated the people who did not react or prevent the violent events, but just watched them. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan warned, "As a society, we are becoming self-centered on some issues." "Especially new generations are more conformist, weaker in empathy, and more focused on their own interests," said Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that the disease of narcissism, which is very common in Western culture, threatens the younger generations.
University student Zelal Topçul, who was kidnapped from the minibus in Mersin by people including his relatives, said: He was rescued by the police. The city bandits who kidnapped the young girl were detained. The footage of T.H. torturing the cat he caught at the army lodge in Erzincan horrified the audience. It was noteworthy that in both incidents, the witnesses did not prevent the incident and remained spectators.
Remaining a spectator to violence does not comply with Turkish culture!
Üsküdar University Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said that it was remarkable to remain a spectator to the violent events. Stating that the situation is not compatible with the cultural behavior of the Turkish society, Prof.Dr. Tarhan said:
“This Turkey is not the old Turkey, it is very interesting. Especially when that soldier beats the cat three days before his leave and there are three soldiers with him. It is a situation that does not comply with the cultural behavior of Turkish people. In such situations, we often had a cultural behavior of standing by the oppressed and the oppressed. We did not see this behavior in this case, I don't know if it is a coincidence, but this makes us wonder if the disease of Western culture has passed on to us culturally. Generally, we are a society known for our helpfulness, holding the hands of those who have fallen, and not kicking those who have fallen to the ground. It is sad to see that these characteristics of ours have somehow weakened. Especially after seeing this cat incident, I was very impressed by the insensitivity of other people. Why does this occur? It may be a coincidence, but I think that, as a society, we are self-centered on some issues. Especially new generations, new generations; For example, if there were people around the age of 40-50 in that environment, I don't think they would have reacted the same way.”
As a society, We are becoming self-centered!
Noting that the pre-90 generations had social ideals and social goals, regardless of their worldview, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that the generations born after the 1990s, known as Generation Y, and who entered adolescence in this period, were weaker in empathy and more self-centered than previous generations, and said: “Previous generations could take risks for society and others. Regardless of their worldview, they were idealists. They could express their opinions openly. But we see that new generations are more conformist and self-centered. If these new generations become the general culture of Turkey, we can say that we have entered into serious corruption here. "The generation known as Generation Y, those born after the 1990s and who entered adolescence in this period, are weaker in empathy than previous generations, are more self-centered, more focused on their own interests, and have narcissistic personality traits," he said.
The malady of narcissism. It affects the new generation
Prof. stated that narcissism, which is a common disease especially in developed countries, affects the young generation. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “This situation, defined as a disease, affects the younger generations. This disease of Western culture plays an important role in the emergence of mental illnesses in young people and the increase in child psychiatric cases. We can say that this is like the last period of Rome in the course of humanity. In the late Roman period, Rome was the world's only superpower. It was not an external force that destroyed Rome, it was corruption and internal degradation. They indulged in luxury and entertainment, and oppressed the weak and powerless. As a result, Rome gradually disintegrated. "It is very hurtful to see this disease in Turkey while we are feeling this in the West right now, saying there is a disintegration in the West," he said.
He cannot accept that girl saying no
Prof also touched upon the incident of the kidnapping of a young girl from a minibus in Mersin. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said:
The power should be in the rules, not in individuals!
“There is tyranny here, cyberbullying is a trouble for the USA. Violence at school and sending guns to school are a nuisance for the USA. We often see these situations spread around the world in the form of epidemics. New generation egocentric He immediately says "whatever I want" and pursues pleasure. He wants to get it easy. He can't look at the situation from other people's perspective, he can't accept that girl saying no to him. In the case of the soldier who beat the cat, you see that he broke up with his fiancée and took out his anger on the cat. These events show that egos in society are inflated. When evaluating these events, what kind of environment did that child grow up in, what kind of personality structure does he have? This is what happens if you raise a child who is raised as the little ruler of the house, who is used to always taking and never giving or sharing.”
In a society, power does not lie with individuals. Stating that it should be in the rules, Prof.Dr. Tarhan listed his suggestions as follows:
“In societies where the power is in the rules, people know that those who make a mistake will pay the price in such situations, but he pointed out that in a society, if the power is not in the rules but in individuals, these events may occur more often. Prof. dr. Tarhan said, “Unfortunately, our cultural structure also fosters this. The power should be in the rules, not in individuals, and this needs to be taught. But this teaching does not happen through conferences or lessons. This can only be achieved by adults being role models and examples. This is needed more. Let's raise young people in schools to teach them to be good people. Let's train that way. Do you know what Japan did? When American culture begins to change its own culture, it teaches primary school children its own culture entirely. Then the child learns physics, chemistry and geography. When we do not teach our moral values and human values to children at the primary and secondary school level, they are late for high school and university. When we do not teach this, the child's foundation is laid weakly.”
They get it without working! Nevzat Tarhan said, “They get it without working hard, and in the face of many events, their parents think more than them. Unfortunately, the new generation is mostly like this. "Culture is alive, in order for the culture to develop positively, cultural policies must be created and culture should be given as much importance as the importance given to sports," he warned.
