Frozen Shoulder Syndrome

If you cannot take your wallet out of your back pocket, cannot brush your teeth, cannot open your closet, cannot pick up objects from a high place, and have problems putting on your clothes, your shoulder may be frozen. One of the problems that occur in the shoulders and causes serious limitation of movement along with pain is "Frozen shoulder syndrome". This disease, which reduces the quality of life, can occur spontaneously or develop due to any shoulder injury. Diabetes mellitus is among the most important risk factors in this disease, which is mostly seen in women.

REASONS OF FROZEN SHOULDER?

The causes of frozen shoulder are various. In fact, in the most common percentage, the exact cause is not known. Women are more prone to get this condition than men. This problem is mostly seen in women aged 40 and over. Sometimes, years after a shoulder injury, dull shoulder pain may occur (ideopathic). Frozen shoulder occurs after reasons such as shoulder-joint-tendon tears and shoulder-joint calcification. In the third place are the cases with shoulder-joint movement limitation after trauma or surgery.

In ideological frozen shoulder patients, especially diabetes, thyroid problems, high cholesterol, heart problems, presence of breast diseases in women and neck problems. It should be investigated whether there are any problems. It should not be forgotten that most of the patients who develop frozen shoulder today are people who are under intense stress. The response to treatment may be less satisfactory in patients with these diseases, especially diabetes.

The first symptoms in frozen shoulder patients usually begin with pain. Then, there is a limitation in shoulder joint movements. The shoulder is a joint made up of many separate parts. Thanks to these parts, you can lift, rotate and swing your arm. However, if frozen shoulder is present, certain parts of the joint are pulled inward. In other words, it gets compressed and contracts. In this case, when you want to move your arm, you usually feel pain and stiffness. In untreated cases, limitation of shoulder joint movements may be permanent.

WAYS IT OCCURS

Frozen shoulder, which occurs in two different ways, occurs spontaneously out of the blue. It can also develop due to any shoulder injury. In spontaneous frozen shoulder disease, the capsule tissues called ligaments inside the shoulder harden and swell. It is not known which mechanism triggers this formation. Frozen shoulder, which develops due to shoulder injury or intervention, can sometimes be caused by a fracture or surgical intervention. In such cases, patients must start physiotherapy within a week or two without waiting.

TREATMENT FOR FROZEN SHOULDER

Physical therapy is applied to frozen shoulder in the early or middle stage. By increasing the flexibility of shoulder movement through physical therapy, degeneration of that area is prevented. In cases where physical therapy is insufficient, that is, when very serious degeneration occurs in the shoulder area, when treatment is not responded to for a long time, and when the soft tissue cannot be opened in any way, arthroscopy is used to enter this area and separate the hardened and adherent tissues. This situation should be tried to be protected by applying physical therapy after the surgery.
