One of the most important causes of pain radiating to the waist and leg area is a herniated disc. The effect of some chemical substances secreted from the jelly-like structure called nucleus pulposus inside the disc is the source of these pains.
What are the symptoms of a herniated disc?
Pain in the waist and leg area is the most common cause of a herniated disc. are among the major symptoms. The pain, which is initially located in the waist, then spreads to the leg and is usually unilateral. The side can be changed or bilateral.
A common complaint is that the waist bends to one side, also called scoliosis. Pains; It may be mild, moderate or severe. In advanced cases, wasting and thinning of the leg muscles and coldness in the leg may occur.
How is a Herniated Disc Diagnosed?
The diagnosis of a herniated disc is usually made according to the expression and appearance of the patients. However, laboratory examinations, plain x-rays, tomography and MRI may be required to determine the degree of the disease and to differentiate it from other diseases.
How is Ozone Applied in Lumbar Herniation?
Ozone treatment is used for two herniated discs.
In the first method, ozone is applied once, under operating room conditions and with the help of imaging devices, directly into the disc causing the herniation. This method does not require anesthesia or a scalpel. This method has very few side effects and can be repeated. There is no need to stay in hospital after treatment with this method. The patient can be discharged on the same day. This method can also be described as "ozone discectomy" because it is as effective as surgery.
The second method is applied in a normal outpatient clinic. Approximately 10 cc of ozone is injected with the help of a very thin dental needle into a depth of 5 centimeters on both sides of the waist, 3 on the right and 3 on the left, where the vertebrae causing the herniated disc are located. Thus, ozone gas is absorbed and shows its effects by affecting the depths, around the disc and around the swollen nerve. This method needs to be applied every day. The patient gets rid of his problems after a total of 12 to 14 applications. Another name for this method is Diskosan.
How Does Ozone Affect Lumbar Herniation?
The formations we call discs located between our vertebrae act as shock absorbers. If it is damaged for any reason, a hernia occurs. This jelly-like part of the disc overflows and puts pressure on the nerve tissue. As a result of this overflow, the disc deteriorates.
As a result of ozone being introduced into the disc, structures called 'proteoglycans' break down and become unable to hold water. The formation of free oxygen radicals is prevented. The disc contracts mechanically and mummifies, thus swelling and eliminating pain.
