Patients suffering from gastritis and ulcers often start using a stomach protector without consulting a physician. These drugs, called gastroprotective drugs, work by stopping the acid secretion of the stomach. In a non-acid environment, digestion of foods, especially protein-containing foods, is impaired. Considering the side effects of drugs, their indiscriminate use causes more harm than good.
When we look at the causes of diseases such as gastritis and ulcers, the majority of them are caused by a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori. This bacterium lives in an acidic environment. It causes disease by both increasing acid secretion and weakening the stomach's acid protection mechanisms.
This bacterium can be diagnosed by many methods. One of these methods is endoscopy. With endoscopy, we can visually see the damage caused by bacteria and take samples for detection. Diagnosis can be made in a very short time with the rapid urease test.
There are many options for treatment. Antibiotics and gastroprotective drugs are used in combination. In cases where there is no response, the next step treatment is taken. As with every disease, treatments aimed at the cause of the disease rather than the complaint have always been satisfactory.
