Psychiatrist Prof. states that people who do not strongly believe in the reasons for war may experience war shock. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “A person who says and believes that he is fighting for these reasons does not experience war shock. "The feeling of martyrdom provides this to us," he said.
Uskudar University Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan evaluated the effects of war psychology on the individual.
The brain blocks itself in war shock
Wars have a "war shock" effect, especially on some soldiers in the war. Stating that this is the reason and the importance of professional support in this regard, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said that one fifth of the war casualties in World War II were due to war shock.
Prof. Dr. Tarhan said, “There are separation companies in the medical battalions in the armed forces and psychiatry staff in the medical battalions. It was put in place to combat the shock of war. A person's combat stress response is an acute stress response. Just as we block our arms when we are afraid and do not move them, when a person secretes excessive stress hormones in the brain, the brain blocks itself. "It closes itself off to all senses, even the five senses," he said.
Cognitive blindness occurs in the brain at the moment of shock
Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan gave the example of the Marmara earthquake, where great traumas were experienced. Emphasizing the importance of timely and correct intervention, Prof. Dr. Tarhan said, “During the Marmara earthquake, people were not eating bread, they were walking around, they were not hungry. In these events, a condition that we call cognitive blindness occurs in the brain and people move without being able to see anything. The brain secretes excessive stress hormones and at that moment the energy flow stops. "If the correct intervention is made here, the person is immediately taken to a quiet environment, and if an anti-stress medication is given, the person will recover within a few hours," he said.
If the person does not believe in war for strong reasons, he goes into war shock
Prof. states that people who do not strongly believe in the justifications of war may be led into shock. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “If a person does not believe in war for strong reasons and believes by saying 'I am fighting for these reasons', there is no war shock. For example, the feeling of martyrdom provides this to us. 'If your own life is in danger in the military "You will not quit, you will continue," the soldier said. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “These are extremely harmful, such as covering up the truth, turning off the television immediately, not letting anyone watch any news. We will not raise our child like a greenhouse flower. The child feels safe or unsafe depending on the reaction of the mother and father. If the parents are worried, because of the war, for example; If he says, 'We will leave, we are moving, we burned, we died, we are ruined,' then the child becomes afraid. "In such situations, when parents interpret and analyze this event, they will talk to the child like a big person, but will not expect big human behavior," he said.
