Perception of Beauty in Recent Times

“LET'S SHRINK THE NOSE A LITTLE, LET'S ENLARG THE LIPS, SOME FILLER IN THE SIDES OF THE EYE, A LITTLE BOTOX ON THE FOREHEAD, LET'S THINNER THE WAIST... THAT'S OK!”

A human being, born as a social creature, is affected by other people's needs in every area he exists throughout his life. He wonders what he thinks of himself and what impression he makes. Looking beautiful to other people, being attractive and leaving a good impression are among their expectations.

When we look at the origins of the words aesthetics and beauty, we encounter the definition of "aisthesis", that is, sensible perception. According to this definition, beauty refers to a sensible object and an activity directed towards it.

When we look at the historical development of beauty, in recent times and increasingly until today, we see that a material definition of beauty has been formed, and in the field of art, this definition is based on the female body. appears to be transferred. It can be said that during the Renaissance, the beauty of women was centered on the female body, which appealed to men and presented its beauty to men. Women watch themselves being watched. This current situation also determines the woman's relationship with herself. There are great similarities between the emphasis on women's beauty and body in the paintings or architectural works of the Renaissance period and the presentation of women seen in today's media. The change and development of technological conditions, along with historical processes, have now included the male body in this interpretation and emphasis.

The concept of beauty can quickly reach many people as a result of the current technological opportunities we have, with its processes involving effort and competition, and is also subject to evaluation by individuals' fellow humans. Physical beauty appears as a feature that everyone pays attention to, cares about, and strives to possess, perhaps more than in any other period in history.

With the importance given to beautiful appearance, being attractive is inevitably admired by the majority of people. and the desire to be preferred arose. For this reason, people put in intense effort and effort to look more beautiful.

Aesthetic needs are at the top of the hierarchy of needs. It is included in the categories. The need for aesthetics and beauty refers to the human desire to enjoy and encourage beauty. Following the latest styles in appearance and clothing, having a certain style, and wearing make-up are ways of expressing one's aesthetic understanding. As understood, aesthetic values that express individual beauty needs are not the same for everyone.

Being outside the imposition of beauty in accordance with common and accepted norms leaves the person with an insecure and anxious situation. What creates the insecurity here is; They may have concerns about being left out of the group, failure, loneliness, not being liked, not being preferable, and self-worth.

As a result, people's negative body perceptions regarding their bodies and physical appearance cause social appearance anxiety.

Social appearance anxiety is not only an anxiety arising from the individual's body shape; It is a more general and holistic anxiety condition that negatively affects daily social activities, including concerns about reasons such as height, weight, and face shape.

We can talk about three basic situations that affect people's social appearance concerns; peers, parents and new mass media. With the influence of these factors, people internalize the physical appearance ideals presented and compare their appearance with other individuals. If the individual does not have the ideal physical characteristics, negative thoughts about body image are triggered and social appearance anxiety may increase.

Social media; It is seen as a communication tool that suggests that the condition of being successful, beautiful and preferred is to have visual perfection, and that there is an acceptance that "What is beautiful is good". The belief that people with high likability have personality traits that are always preferred by society can also be misleading.

The filters applied to posts shared on social media generally include lip and eye enlargement, nose reduction, skin smoothing. There are some artificial and technological aesthetic procedures such as lifting, narrowing the cheek area, and lighting in the forehead and cheekbone area. Individuals who do not realize that these posts are not completely real begin to have unrealistic expectations about their own appearance. They begin to compare themselves with themselves and as a result, their concerns about their beauty are increasing.

As a result of these thoughts and perceptions, individuals who are dissatisfied with their appearance are increasingly resorting to plastic surgery interventions in order to cope with this situation and improve their quality of life.
