What is chin aesthetics?
Although the chin is often an underestimated and overlooked part of the face, it actually plays an important role in facial contour. A small chin can make the nose look larger, while a large chin can make the nose look smaller. With chin surgeries, it is possible to correct the contours of the face by ensuring balance and harmony between the other structures of the face and the chin.
Jaw surgery, also known as mentoplasty, is a suitable procedure for people who are uncomfortable with the shape or size of the chin. This procedure is performed to remove and reshape a part of the jawbone by reducing its size or to change the size and shape of the jaw with the help of prostheses.
Who is the suitable candidate for chin aesthetic surgery?
This procedure is beneficial for anyone who complains about their jaw shape and size. People who are physically healthy, have a stable weight, and have realistic expectations are good candidates for this surgery.
What are the goals of chin aesthetic surgery?
The aim is to eliminate disproportions between chin size and shape and other parts of the face, thus correcting facial harmony. Chin surgery is often performed in conjunction with plastic surgery procedures such as a brow lift or rhinoplasty.
What is done during chin aesthetic surgery?
Chin aesthetic surgery is performed as a day surgery and the patient is discharged on the same day. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and may take 1 to 2 hours. There are 2 different incision areas used for the procedure:
The incision is made in the natural fold under the chin, the surgery is performed from here.
The incision is made inside the mouth, below the chin. Enlargement and reduction operations are performed here.
During chin surgery, depending on the patient's complaint, a bone piece can be removed for reduction or the shape and size of the chin is changed by moving the chin tip back and forth. If it is small, it can be enlarged with the help of fat injection, prostheses or moving the jaw forward.
What are the scars?
As plastic surgeons, we know the importance of cosmetic outcome. We We make every effort to optimize scar size and conceal it in the least visible area of the breast. In external incisions made under the chin, the scar is hidden in the natural fold. Incisions made inside the mouth do not leave any scars on the outside. Your plastic surgeon will determine the method that is suitable for you.
This scar formation varies between individuals and is highly dependent on the person's genetic predisposition. Scars usually fade gradually over time, but their final size and color are difficult to predict.
How is the recovery period? How much rest is required? When can you resume exercise?
After the procedure performed externally under the chin, the surgical area is covered with a protective dressing. Once the anesthesia wears off, you will be able to go home. For a comfortable post-surgery and good results, it would be appropriate to rest after the procedure. To minimize swelling and bruising in the head and face area, rest with the head up for the first few days and ice can be applied intermittently. During the first few days after surgery, there may be pain and swelling that responds to medications. After the procedure in the mouth, recommended mouthwash and medications should be used to clean the mouth. Additionally, taking liquid soft foods for 1 week will reduce pain and swelling. Many patients can return to work within 3 to 5 days. During the recovery period, strenuous physical activities should be avoided for 4 weeks after surgery.
What are the complications of the surgery?
Complications are rare, as in other cosmetic procedures, and include scarring, asymmetry, bleeding, infection, poor wound healing, swelling, and numbness may occur. Complications specific to chin aesthetic surgery include poor lip sensation due to nerve damage and removal of prostheses due to infection. Some of these complications may require additional surgical procedures. Your plastic surgeon will give detailed information about the expected results, including possible complications.
When will we see the final results of the surgery?
Surgery results will be seen immediately after the procedure. It will continue to heal over time as the swelling decreases. Generally The incisions heal within 1 week, and swelling and bruises disappear. Small amounts of unnoticeable swelling may persist for several months after surgery. Final contour and scar results last at least 6 months after surgery.
