Alcohol Addiction and Treatment

Alcohol has been used for pleasure, as a sedative, narcotic and medicine since ancient times. Problems related to alcohol use have become one of the most important problems of our age. Alcohol use disorders cause health problems, traffic accidents, premature death, crime, family problems, and economic problems. Problems related to alcohol use are grouped under two headings. Alcohol abuse (harmful use) and alcohol dependence. The main problem with alcohol use is that the person who uses alcohol loses control over alcohol. A person who decides to drink alcohol at a certain level loses control over alcohol when he starts drinking. He cannot control the amount of alcohol he consumes. Behavioral changes and the development of dangerous and aggressive behavior after drinking alcohol are also problems related to alcohol use. Some people have intermittent periods of heavy alcohol use. A person does not drink alcohol for a certain period of time, but when he starts drinking alcohol, he cannot control himself and has very intense drinking attacks. This is called dipsomania.

Individuals who have problems with alcohol use generally do not want to accept or realize this problem. We often hear our patients say, "I can drink whenever I want, I don't have a problem with alcohol." The problem with alcohol use and addiction in general is not quitting alcohol or substances. The problem is not being able to remove it from your life completely. On the contrary, individuals who have problems with alcohol use have tried to reduce or completely quit drinking alcohol many times. Most individuals with alcohol use disorder have many psychiatric diseases that begin before or after alcohol use. The journey, which starts out pleasant, causes problems within the family after a while, and the person begins to be unable to fulfill the responsibilities he/she has to fulfill (if he/she is working, being late for work, decreasing the time spent on work, not being able to fulfill the responsibilities required by being a spouse or parent). He begins to have health problems. Treatment is generally applied at this stage.
