There may be many causes of elbow pain. I will discuss one of the most common of these. I would like to give information about "lateral epicondylitis", popularly known as tennis elbow.
It progresses with inflammation of the muscle fibers adhering to the lateral (outer) part of the elbow. These muscles enable the wrist and fingers to be lifted. Pain is felt where the muscle attaches to the bone or along the muscle. Pain usually becomes evident after pain activities in the arm. For housewives, it may be related to activities such as ironing and mopping the floor. Pain causes a decrease in the grip strength of the hand in patients and difficulty in lifting even light objects. The disease is known as "tennis elbow" because people who play tennis contract this disease if they play with improper technique. On the contrary, "golfer's elbow" is seen in the inner part of the elbow.
The causes of lateral epicondiitis are;
-Daily use of the arm or an injury to this area, It causes increased stress and damage at the attachment point of the muscle.
-It may also be caused by inappropriate sudden movements and unexpected tensions of the elbow.
-Symptoms begin in the elbow. This problem usually occurs in people who have high wrist and arm activity or who lift heavy objects with their palms facing the ground.
-This disease is common in people in their thirties and forties.
Signs and symptoms:
-The place where the pain is most intense is on the bone protrusion known as the lateral epicondyle on the outside of the elbow. This place is painful with palpation.
-The feeling of discomfort increases during grasping.
-In severe cases, every movement of the elbow creates pain.
Treatment:
-The first thing to do is to reduce the activities that cause pain and to lift painful objects with the palm facing the ground and to rest the elbow.
-Sometimes, with the help of a band wrapped around the elbow, the injured muscles are protected during healing. is provided.
-In some cases, wrist splint (rest splint) is used for the same purpose.
-One of the first options is physical therapy. In physical therapy, the area is prepared for treatment with appropriate electrotherapy agents. Massage is performed and taping is done in a pain-free position. It is treated with appropriate Stretching and Strengthening exercises. Generally, patients recover with physical therapy.
-Medication therapy is started along with physical therapy. In very serious cases, if these do not help, injection therapy is performed in the elbow area and medication is injected.
- As the disease progresses to recovery. Normal activities can be returned slowly. If there is no response to medication and physical therapy, surgical treatment is recommended.
