Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Sports

The subjects with the highest number of referrals to child psychiatry are: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which is initially perceived as a childhood-specific condition, 20 As of the th century, it took its place among the disorders that were observed to continue in adulthood, that is, accepted to continue throughout life. Nevertheless, the importance given to the childhood period of ADHD is preserved due to reasons such as being a neurodevelopmental disorder, the flexibility of the child's brain in its developmental period, and its ability to respond to interventions with positive changes. It turns into "inner restlessness experienced in situations where it has to sit and wait". Fortunately, a hyperactive adult bouncing on the top of the armpit is not a common phenomenon.

Even if the condition exists, one of the most challenging issues for families, apart from the symptoms of the disorder, is their concern about taking medication. However, currently the most effective intervention method is pharmacological intervention.

Does exercise have a place in the treatment of ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder neurodevelopmental is considered a disorder. The hereditary component is evident. However, even if we have a genetic predisposition to some diseases, the interaction of our genes with the environmental conditions we live in, especially during childhood, can change some things in a positive way. The developmental flexibility of the child's brain and the positive effects of childhood interventions on ADHD symptoms, on the other hand, the positive effect of exercise on the growth, flexibility and development of neurons, cognitive functions and behaviors have enabled the examination of the relationship between exercise and ADHD.

The result of a review of 23 studies investigating the effect of exercise on ADHD symptoms is that; After exercise, there are improvements in both inattention/hyperactivity/impliance, emotional problems and behavioral problems. Closed (motor) skills are better for hyperactivity/imperfection problems, overt (motor)

Open and closed skills are classifications made according to the predictability of the environment during the activity performed in sports. In activities that require open skills, there are largely uncontrollable variables such as other people in the environment, air, wind, ground, and the person should regulate his performance according to environmental factors. Examples of the class of explicit (motor) skills that have been shown to be; sports such as jogging in the forest, team sports (football, basketball, volleyball..), tennis, surf rafting.

In activities defined as closed skills, the environment is more stable, can be controlled by the person and is stable. These are sports where there are fewer variables and where the person can decide on the start, finish and performance. Examples of implicit skills that have been found to have positive effects on hyperactivity and impulsivity problems; In basketball, individual sports such as free throws, dart throwing, archery, bowling, swimming alone in the pool can be shown. Even if it is not a sport, playing a musical instrument on one's own can be counted in this category after learning. When it is done for a long time, there is no comprehensive literature information about how much the symptoms decrease and how long this reduction continues. However, even if encouraging children to do exercises appropriate for their age and development does not cure ADHD; doing sports will also make visible contributions to children in emotional, social and behavioral areas such as “playing games”.
