Unfinished Business or Also Known as the Zeigarnik Effect…

This concept, which was first noticed and brought to the agenda in the early 1900s, has been the subject of many studies. It is named after Bluma Wifona Zeigarnik, a Russian psychiatrist and psychologist.

In the 1920s, Zeigarnik went to a restaurant with a group of psychologist friends and placed their orders. A single waiter took the order. What's more surprising is that he didn't record any orders. The waiter brought everyone's order completely and accurately, without forgetting any of their orders. The group ate their meal and left the restaurant.

Ziegarnik realizes that she forgot her shawl at the restaurant and returns. She finds the waiter serving them and asks if he saw her shawl. The waiter remembers neither himself nor his shawl. She doesn't even remember that large group of psychologists. Finding this situation very surprising, Zeiganik asks the waiter how he keeps all these orders in mind. The only thing the waiter told the psychologist was that he wrote down the orders in his mind and deleted the orders from his mind after ensuring that the meals were delivered to the relevant people. This situation attracted Zeigarnik's attention and he came to the following conclusion through his studies: Unfinished, unfinished tasks occupy the mind more. When the work is finished, the mind frees itself from this preoccupation.

The unfinished business theory, which has been the subject of many studies later, actually describes the plans, projects and works that remain stuck in our minds like nails, so to speak. For example, a student prepares a study plan. And he promises himself; He/she will start following this work plan starting from the first Monday. It starts, but after two or three days of implementation, deviations from the plan begin. And it doesn't continue, it leaves it unfinished. But the work he left unfinished never leaves his mind alone. It is constantly in the back of his mind, and what's worse is that it prevents him from doing the activities he wants to do. In this case, the student can neither have full fun nor engage in any other work.

Or some of us prepare a diet list. He will start his diet on the first day of the week, follow it strictly, and reach his target weight. After a few days of following the diet strictly, everything falls to the wayside. And the diet remains incomplete again. Another one of us will start the deep cleaning before the holiday. But at the beginning of the week prefers to get over it. He dreams of cleaning his house thoroughly and hosting his guests with peace of mind. Such a deep cleaning was undertaken that perhaps only the kitchen cabinets were wiped on the first day. Cleaning the corners and corners was a burden that could not be overcome and was left unfinished. Moreover, this situation also has a side effect; The danger of losing faith in oneself over time.

All these unfinished tasks create a burden on our backs, and when we have the opportunity to think about our plans or goals, they crush us with all their weight and occupy our minds. Because we postpone our work. And the tasks that we postponed but could not complete, grow bigger and bigger every day that we do not put our plans into practice, disturbing our minds like a nail.

So, is there no way to get out of this situation? What is the solution to the problem?

Of course there is. Dividing our big goals into days or small goals that can be easily achieved. And most importantly, to provide our own mental motivation, starting from the step we can achieve most easily.

Each stage we achieve will be a reward for us and a source of strength for the next step. Realizing that it is getting closer to its goals each time, our mind will gather strength for the next step, while at the same time, it will free itself from unfinished work, one by one, that bothers it like ingrown nails.

Note: In romantic relationships that ended in disappointment in the early youth, the abandoned party's inability to forget their Ex Love and perhaps making some mistakes in subsequent emotional relationships due to past prejudices or traumas are among the Unfinished Businesses. But the solution to this issue will not be as above. That is the subject of another article…
