Approach to Lymph Node Size in Children

Enlargement of lymph nodes in children is a finding encountered during physical examination. Although most of it is due to benign causes, it can sometimes be a sign of an important underlying disease.

Lymph nodes are located in clusters in many parts of our body, are the most important part of our immune system, and when any infectious agent enters the body, they first appear. glands that contain immune system cells. It is found in clusters in certain parts of our body, especially on the neck, under the chin, in the armpits, in the groin, in the abdomen and chest, and behind the knees. Lymph nodes work more actively in children than adults.

Reasons that Enlarge Lymph Nodes in Children

1. Infections are the most common cause. (Bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites)

2. Autoimmune diseases (such as childhood rheumatism)

3. Congenital metabolic diseases

4. Lymph node tumors and leukemias

Important Points When Evaluating Lymph Nodes in Children

1. Size: If the size of the lymph node exceeds 1.5 cm in the neck and in the groin, the lymph nodes in the abdomen are 2 cm and the lymph nodes in the chest exceed 5 cm, further research is absolutely necessary.

2. Pain and Tenderness: Mostly benign lymph nodes have pain, increase in temperature and redness. Again, such lymph nodes are not attached to the surrounding tissue and are mobile.

3. Consistency: While the rubbery glands suggest the risk of 'lymphoma', that is, lymph node cancer, softer glands are in favor of infection.

4. Location of the lymph node: For example, enlargement of lymph nodes just above the collarbone is an indicator of diseases such as cancer, while the size of the lymph nodes in front of or behind the ear is mostly benign and indicates infection.

When you notice lymph node enlargement in your child's body, I recommend that you consult a specialist.
