Sleep Apnea Increases the Risk of Coronavirus Disease

In the coronavirus pandemic, Sleep Apnea is a very important risk condition that needs to be taken into consideration.

Although the prevalence of Sleep Apnea in society is 5%, most people live with it, unaware that they have this disease.

Symptoms of Sleep Apnea: Severe snoring, interruption of breathing during sleep followed by severe snoring, accompanied by frequent trips to the toilet at night, high blood pressure, waking up tired and unhappy in the morning after a sleep with a struggle for breathing, fatigue during the day, sleepiness. If you experience mood swings, decreased concentration, forgetfulness, or falling asleep in traffic, you may have sleep apnea. Most of the time, we do not go to the doctor because we are aware of such situations as complaints, which we do not think could be a disease, and which may have many excuses such as the intensity of our daily work life, work fatigue. Sleep Apnea progresses insidiously, unnoticed, and when conditions caused by sleep apnea emerge over time, such as blood pressure disease, heart rhythm disorders, diabetes that we cannot control, asthma that does not respond to treatment, and excessive weight gain despite diet, we go to the doctor to look for a solution.

Sleep apnea poses a risk for coronavirus disease:

1- Apneas cause the immune system to weaken: Sleep disorders and insomnia cause our immune system to weaken. Apneas disrupt our sleep structure and prevent us from getting enough sleep.

2- Due to decreased oxygen during sleep: Depending on the severity of sleep apnea, oxygen deficiency occurring during sleep, cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, chronic inflammation, obesity (obesity) may occur, and in these cases, the coronavirus disease may progress severely, It may cause the need for intensive care during treatment. What to do if we suspect Sleep Apnea:

In the Sleep Disorders Center, you are admitted to the Sleep Laboratory for one night, sleep apnea is diagnosed, its severity is measured and treatment is planned.

Sleep Apnea is a disease that can be definitively treated. What is important is that it must be diagnosed and treated early, before other diseases can develop.
